The question this week is...

Should Gordon Brown have given in to Joanna Lumley on the Gurkhas issue?

Yes

No. The Gurkhas are mercenary soldiers who were paid for their services. We certainly owe them no more than the Iraqi interpreters that we are now happy to abandon. It is a sad day when democratically elected government has policy dictated to them by a second-rate actress.

This is a double-edged question. While I’m not sure the rights and wrongs of the Gurkhas’ situation are as cut and dried as the charming Ms Lumley would have us believe, it’s frankly absurd that she should so easily be able to box the Prime Minister into a corner to the cheers of the public. Why couldn’t Brown come out and say he’d had a change of heart of flatly contradict her the moment the actress had held her astonishing press conference. Let’s get rid of him ASAP. The Prime Minister has now proved beyond doubt that he lacks the authority to lead.

Yes without a doubt. It's the least we can do.
Why doesn't the government give themselves a target of kicking out an undesirable, false asylum seeker or resenter of the British way of life for every ex Gurkha or family member they let in.

Yes, definitely!
