SENIOR military officers, MPs and the relatives of the UK's war dead last night urged the Government to recognise the contribution made by service personnel with the creation of an Armed Forces Day.
The three groups believe a new AF Day would be a public tribute to the sacrifices made by servicemen and women after years of conflict in Iraq and Afghanistan, in which 264 personnel have died and more than 1,000 have been injured.

On the day, all military personnel would be encouraged to wear uniform in public and open days would be held at barracks around the country.

The campaign is backed by Lord Guthrie, chief of the defence staff under Tony Blair, who said: "I believe an Armed Forces Day would be welcome and supported by the military. It is a marvellous idea."

I am with you on this one. Our forces shouldn't be sent to Afghanistan, Iraq or any other war other zone without proper equipment.

To justify the war in Iraq, no doubt. Don't we have Remembrance Day?

Scothighland has his sum wrong. British Forces are tough; their Royal Marines are the cream of the crop. How long would they remain so if they were never sent to war?
Arguably there must be some war for which one has Armed Forces. Somewhere one either makes a stand, or stands for Nothing. Europe will find her nerve again, or falter in the face of Jihad, and require rescue.
