Gloves off but neither man lands a blow

IT WAS the most-anticipated TV event of the year. Watched by an estimated 60 million Americans, the two men who would lead the United States went head to head on Friday night at the University of Mississippi, but viewers who tuned in hoping to see blood on the floor were left disappointed. Neither Democrat Barack Obama nor Republican opponent John McCain delivered a knockout blow.
The debate was due to concentrate on foreign policy and national security. But with the US economy reeling and Washington power brokers working around the clock to secure a $700bn (£380bn) rescue package, the first 40 minutes of the 90-minute debate were given over to domestic policy and the financial crisis.

With just 37 days to go and some polls showing as many as 30% of voters still undecided, the two men had everything to play for. For many Americans, the presidential debates are the first time they tune into the election. Political reputations can be made or lost in this gladiatorial arena, where body language and style are as important as facts and arguments.

Obama took round one. The Illinois senator repeatedly sought to link McCain to President George Bush and said it was the policies of excessive deregulation that had led to the economic crisis.

Despite being pressed repeatedly on the economy and how the current economic crisis would impact on their plans as president, both candidates refused to give details.

McCain stayed on message throughout. He hammered home his experience and knowledge of foreign affairs. Seven times McCain used a variation of the phrase that Obama "doesn't understand". McCain said: "There are some advantages to experience, knowledge and judgment … I don't think I need any on-the-job training."

In making repeated reference to his long senate career, McCain, 72, risked seeming old against a candidate 25 years his junior. It was a calculated risk, but one designed to sell McCain as the man with the experience necessary to get the country back on track.

In turn, Obama tried to paint his opponent as out of date, accusing him of having a "20th-century mindset" and championing his own internet accessible "Google for government".

There were a few missteps, but no outright clangers and, overall, McCain scored higher in the second half of the debate. Though McCain had the upper hand when the debate turned to foreign affairs, Obama took every opportunity to question his support of the Iraq war.

Obama said: "You said it was going to be quick and easy. You said we knew where the weapons of mass destruction were. You were wrong. You said we were going to be greeted as liberators. You were wrong."

The men's body language told its own story. Obama looked presidential, but could appear passionless and became flustered when McCain made assertions the Democrat insisted were wrong. McCain looked tightly-wound, but kept his infamous temper in check, though his irritation at Obama was often barely concealed.

The presidential hopefuls are scheduled to debate twice more, on October 7 and 15.

Fact is, this a debate, not a boxing match. However, given the state of politics, maybe a boxing match would be better. At least it would be over in nine rounds.

Bush and his party protect Osama Bin Laden, that alone should be enough for America to disown them...

which one is it...

there are a LOT of sites out there claiming OBL is dead....

Bhutto in an interview with Frost said he was dead...

even if he's alive, hes not exactly living a very public lifestyle...

as far as bush & co protecting the bin-ladens.... this is america, if your brother (if you have one) or uncle (again if you have one) or aunt, or son... were to commit some heinous act... our government would protect you, unless you were implicit, or complicit in that act... and even then, we would do our best to keep a JFK/Oswald/Ruby chain of events from happening...

its that "innocent until proven guilty" thing

there has never been any implications that I have seen for those bin ladens who were on their way out of the country in 9/12&13...

just some "bush spirited them out of the country" conspiracy theories...

What have you been smoking? Or are you just a mean vile person and enjoy sayig stupid things? Their former Presidnet Clinton is the only one who protected OBL when he said no thank you when he was offered OBL twice on a silver platter.

The twin towers get hit and they fall to the ground!
Among the rubble lie the dead bodies of thousands of innocent people whose families will live with the nightmare forever. They can never escape it! Not ever.

Bush arrives in New York and stands a top the rubble with a blow horn in hand. He looks around at the people gathered and with a look of shock in his eyes he tells the world that this attack was the work of Bin Laden and he swears to go after them. HE NEVER DID!

Instead he goes after Saddam and leaves Osama Bin Laden.

With all the technology, man power and money at his disposal. With all the top soldiers, navy seals and under cover agents he has access to, he cannot deliver Osama Bin Laden? Cmon, do me a favour!!!

"With all the top soldiers, navy seals and under cover agents he has access to, he cannot deliver Osama Bin Laden? Cmon, do me a favour!!!"

By this, one assumes, that you believe that because they haven't caught him yet that means they are in a conspiracy together. Is that right? And, your supposition is deduced from the fact that we haven't caught him yet.

You know what, it's real hard to catch one guy. It took seventeen years to catch the Unabomber. And, he was in Montana, not Pakistan. It took five years to catch to catch Eric Rudolph, the guy that bombed the Atlanta Olympic Games. In both cases the FBI was conducting massive operations to find these guys, but never did on their own.

Theodore Kaczynski, the Unabomber, was captured because Kaczynski's sister-in-law persuaded her husband, Kaczynski's brother, to go to the FBI. Even though the FBI agreed that he was the culprit and put him on it's Ten Most Wanted list. It took seventeen years to catch him and it was only because his brother tipped them off. Eric Rudolph was not captured by the FBI. He was captured by Jeffrey Scott Postell of the Murphy Police Department while scavenging a dumpster for food.

Both of these men were arrested in the United States, where nearly everyone speaks English and the investigators can blend in with the local population, they had had with them accurate maps, and not one, not one single one of them got shot at them by Islamofascists. None of the FBI agents were captured and beheaded.

However you seem pretty convinced that we know where he is in Pakistan. I doubt it very much. As soon as we know where he is for sure, we will grab him. However if you think you can catch him, and you seem to believe that that's a easy task, do it yourself. If you say it's easy, go pick up some easy money. He has a big price on his head. You'll never have to work another moment in your life.

compare/contrast Bin Laden with Carlos the Jackal...

it took the french TWENTY YEARS to catch him...

they wanted him every bit as badly as the US wants OBL...

"in the United States, where nearly everyone speaks English"

....or more accurately, a form of English.
