GORDON Brown will fly to America this week to escape from his domestic travails in the hope that some of Barack Obama's magic rubs off on him.
The Prime Minister will use his first face-to-face meeting with the new president to develop an economic strategy that will take the world out of recession and restore his reputation at home.

Brown hopes that by becoming the first European leader
to meet with Obama since his inauguration will enhance his image as an international statesman and silence critics of his leadership within the Labour Party.

His strategists believe that a convincing performance during the trip, which includes Brown making a rare address to a joint session of Congress, would give his flagging popularity the boost it needs if he is to have any chance of holding on to power.

Senior ministers including Harriet Harman, Ed Balls and Jack Straw are said to be jockeying to take over from him at Number 10.

Dismal showings in recent polls have piled the pressure on Brown at a time when he ought to be devoting all his efforts on the economy.

Recently it was reported that Straw would "sign on the dotted line" to lead Labour after an opinion poll found he was the public's choice to replace Brown.

Yesterday, a senior Brown Cabinet ally attempted to play down the speculation about his leadership. John Denham, the Skills Secretary, said the question of who will replace Brown will be irrelevant if the Government fails to steer the country through the recession.

He said the economic crisis was the only battle ministers should be fighting and warned that Labour faced years in the wilderness should they lose the next election.

Denham said: "To me that is the only thing worth thinking about – the ability to rise to that big challenge now – not what might happen after some future election.

"Show that we can master this challenge, win the next election and we will shape politics for the next 10 or 15 years. Lose it, and frankly the debate about who is leader is rather like the debate about who became leader in 1979."

Meanwhile, Brown was given a sharp reminder of his troubles at home when he was booed and jeered by more than 100 protesters as he arrived in Bristol to make a speech to Labour's National Policy Forum.

The protesters were complaining about the Government's plans to part-privatise the Royal Mail.

Last week Lord Mandelson published the bill paving the way for a partial sale of the Royal Mail, insisting it would remain in public hands even though up to 30% could be sold to a foreign firm.

At least seven ministerial aides have now put their names to a Commons motion opposing the controversial policy – with several indicating they might quit over the issue.

The Prime Minister's special envoy to Iraq, Ann Clwyd, has also signed, bringing the number of Labour rebels to 136.

Cabinet ministers are also reported to have been putting pressure on Brown and Mandelson to drop the idea.

In his speech, Brown defended the Government's actions and urged his critics to face the realities of the economic crisis.

Before he flies to Washington on Tuesday for his two day US trip Brown will attend an emergency economic summit in Berlin with all his fellow EU leaders today. The meeting is part of the build-up to the G20 meeting of world leaders that the Prime Minister will host in London in April.

Frank McBride, read this bit and weep............

"His strategists believe that a convincing performance during the trip, which includes Brown making a rare address to a joint session of Congress, would give his flagging popularity the boost it needs if he is to have any chance of holding on to power."

Exactly as I advised you last week.

Don't feel you have to delay in offering me an apology for calling me a liar.

This is superb news for Gordon Brown.

What a coup it will be addressing a joint session of Congress.

Compare that to Salmond's photo call with Hillary Clinton last week.

He looked like one of those idiots that spots a celebrity in the street and runs up to them and says 'Can a get ma photy taken wi you hen?'.

Do you really think they care?

In case you haven't noticed dear Rufus, Obama ain't exactly setting the tumbleweed on fire. When it comes to the roots of the global depression I think yer man Brown is just as culpable as the previous Americans. And sadly I don't think that Obama can fix that.

Obama has came into power at precisely the wrong time. Like many others I felt joyful at his election because he is black and that means so much to so many people. But he has took on a poisoned chalice. If only it was another time. And Brown? Well he's got fuckall to do with it.

Broon is having to chase Obama to stop defeat ... who is he kidding anyway, he will be defeated come what may - the man has led Britain into its worst recession since the 1930s. Just wait till people start getting really nervous around the pound. The chances are increasing everyday that we will see the Labour party thrown into several decades worth of opposition. I hate to say it, but south of the border this could be the big break the Liberals have waited generations for.

So the troll Wufus believes that the admission that Maggie Brown's trip to the US is nothing more than a popularity, election stunt, is a positive thing??

I wonder how much Bill Clinton had to do with this invitation behind the scenes. Maggie Brown considers him as his mentor - you know, in raping pension funds and selling off assets to try and balance books. You can be assured that Bill will be prominently visible.

I think he's using Hillary's position as an excuse to troll around Washington to see if there are any good-looking Interns in the new administration.

Please stop feeding the troll - the more he's encouraged the more he likes it.

The supply of magic dust has run out - Obama needs the lot since he is really Broon multiplied a few times with his major inspiration being how to throw endless piles of money at problems and vested interests to no apparent effect.

Brown needs more than this Saviour - right now he could do with being resurrected as he is now solidly doomed and he's trying to take the rest of us with him as he splurges more and more taxpayer's cash and credit around. History (and he's good at that apparently) will record that his tripartite financial regulation was in fact "no touch" - the signal for the biggest beanfeast ever for politcians and bankers. Goodwin is not the only one who should be deprived of his pension and any standing whatsoever.

You know when you're riding on someone else's coat tails you're a failure.

Quite right, they'll be cheering and punching the air in delight in the Job Centres and in the bankruptcy courts at this news. Support for Labour will climb higher than the pound and we can look forward to a few more years at the trough.

Excellent point - we cannot have the supreme economist and saviour of the world travelling with the commoners and, as everyone knows, there are no scheduled flights to Japan.

Rufus.

I apologise. You must indeed be on the inside track to know about the joint sessions of congress talk. No one else knew about it. Your name's not Sarah, or Iain, is it?

I have a couple of reservations though. Firstly, is it not rather pathtic that the only thing that Brown can do to boost his acceptability is to be seen with Obama? Would it not be the mark of a real leader that he boost his popularity by doing something useful in his own country to improve the dire situation there?

Secondly, I have grave doubts that the average voter, faced by the myriad problems of losing their job, home, and having to having to live on the dole, whilst battling with high fuel prices, the worst public transport in Europe, the knowledge that now on a daily basis troops are being killed in a hopeless unwinnable war, about which government ministers tell us lies, not to mention ministers that say "yes" to the likes of Freddy Goodwin.... is going to say, "ah, but for all that, doesn't it just make you so proud to be English when you see your prime minister up there, enjoying banquets and making speeches, and BEING IN THE SAME ROOM AS THE AMERICAN PRESIDENT?".

This Scottish idiot is finished, methinks.

I am sure President Obama will get on OK or at least tolerate Brown for the time being. The President will no doubt have been advised that he will be dealing with a new Prime Minister in the not-too-distant future.
25

Edward,

Hopefully Pres Obama will be fully breifed by the State Department on McDoom Broons current standing in the UK an that McDoom Broon is on a shuggley hook likely to be ousted this year or next when we have the general election and the ineptone is kicked well and truly out the park!
State Department is responsible for all thisngs foreign an are responsiblefor keeping the president up to date on what going on and who is going down.
Funnily the secretary of State for the state department is Hilary Clinton, who earlier met with our First Minister,I wonder if he marked her card on McDoom Broon?

Griffe,

He wasn't elected to solve the problems of world. His job is to solve the problems of the UK, many of which he created. If he cannot do this, as is blatantly obvious he cannot, he should resign. What is he looking for 'sainthood' as the saviour of the world?

20th Century G boy, you must get over your obsession with me.

Almost all of your posts refer to me.

As amusing as it is, you are becoming a little bit too creepy.

I realise your life is probably very empty, but you should try and get out once and maybe find yourself either a hobby or a job.

It would do you the world of good.

What a buffoon we have in charge. God couldn't improve the fortunes of such an idiot.
