An album of Tom Waits covers is a daunting undertaking for an accomplished singer, let alone for a Hollywood A-lister trying to convince that her recording career is not a frivolous dalliance. Johansson's debut is horribly flawed and laudably credible. Her emotional detachment robs songs like 'Fanning Street' or 'I Don't Want To Grow Up' of their humanity, despite sympathetic choral arrangements. 'I Wish I Was In New Orleans' fares slightly better, and 'Town With No Cheer' manages to capture a little of the paranoid delusion that Waits had in mind.
