MELANIE DIENER, LUCIANO ACOCELLA
Puccini's Heroines

***

MSM 0006, £8.99

The German soprano Melanie Diener first came to public attention as a prizewinner at the Salzburg Mozart Competition, and Mozart roles launched her international singing career: Ilia in Idomeneo for Garsington, and Fiordiligi in Cosi Fan Tutte at Covent Garden.

This sees her tackle a variety of Puccini heroines, from his early Manon Lescaut to Mim and equally doomed Li in his last opera Turandot.

Puccini makes vocal demands that Diener has to work hard to satisfy: her voice doesn't float easily in the higher register. Nevertheless, here is a soprano who shows much promise.
