LUNASA
The Story So Far
*****
Compass Records COM44742, £11.99
Lunasa are the most satisfying of all the bands currently playing Ireland's 21st century national music. Central to their intricate, textured sound is the imaginative, jazzy and dramatic acoustic bass of founder member Trevor Hutchinson. He is heard everywhere here in tandem with some of the top guitarists and too-many-to-list world class musicians who have moved through this famous band over the past decade or so. Sean Smyth's fiddle and Kevin Crawford's flutes and whistles are irrepressibly eloquent, and if you can't catch the band at their imminent Glasgow gig, you'll get a sense of their humour in a track titled 'Dingle Berries'.
