LOUIS ARMSTRONG AND THE ALL STARS
New Orleans Nights

*****

Verve 0602517621336, £9.99

This 1954 album features some of the material used in Louis Armstrong's 1957 Musical Autobiography, and is itself a potted history of the great man's early years in his beloved hometown. He and a particularly star-studded version of the All Stars (including trombonist Jack Teagarden, clarinettist Barney Bigard, pianist Earl Hines and saxophonist Bud Freeman) tear through such standards of the trad repertoire as 'My Bucket's Got A Hole In It', as well as hits from Armstrong's Hot 5 period.
