It's more than 50 years since the Canadian singer-songwriter, poet and novelist Leonard Cohen published his first book of poetry, and for the past three decades he has experimented with different musical styles. His Book Of Longing, comprising poems, ballads and prose, was published in 2006 and set to music by the composer Philip Glass at the end of last year.
Straightforward it isn't: the poetry is full of striking imagery, reflecting a period in the Nineties when Cohen studied Buddhism. Glass's music in this twin-CD recording is softly spoken, rarely stepping into the foreground (but highly effective when it does), his style a fitting partner to Cohen's lyrics.
