Songs From The Sparkle Lounge

Mercury 1762675, £11.99

The pastiche Sgt Pepper cover may feature Richard Hammond, but this is more like Jeremy Clarkson in album form – obvious, loud, offensive and strangely right in a wrong sort of way – from the obtuse rock riffing of 'Go', through the sledgehammer chorused 'Nine Lives' to the glam double bass, drum stomp of 'C'mon C'mon'.

Granted, the opening of the ghastly power ballad 'Love' sounds like Joe Elliott is losing his lunch rather than having his heart broken, but the metal excesses of 'Hallucinate' and 'Come Undone' compensate. What a laugh.
