DAVID RUSSELL
Air On A G String

****

Telarc CD-80693, £12.99

The title is misleading, in so far as Bach's 'Air On A G String' comes at the very end of a CD full of baroque music, much of it arranged by Russell for the guitar. Bach's five-movement 'Partita In A Minor' opens the recording, but the bulk is taken up by a selection of works by Silvius Weiss, Jacques de Saint-Luc and Francois Couperin.

This is carefully performed music, much of it gentle and reflective, from composers who were masters of their art: Couperin, who came from a long line of musicians; Weiss, the highest paid musician at the music-loving Dresden court. Evocative and highly effective.
