Phantasiestücke
****
ATMA ACD2 2516, £12.99
Some instruments established themselves early; others, like the piano and the clarinet, only came to musical prominence in the 18th century, and continued to evolve.
These clarinet works date from the second half of the 19th century: Carl Reinecke composed his Phantasiestücke (Fantasy Pieces) around 1845, four movements in different keys and styles.
The sonata by Joseph Rheinberger is difficult enough to make it a performing rarity, while the Romanze of Marie Elisabeth of Sachsen-Meiningen was written at a court renowned for the quality of its music-making. Well-rounded, with much to enjoy, and performed by two highly talented musicians.
