FOOTBALL at its most fantastical. And farcical. And fabulous. It has taken Queen of the South all of 89 years to reach their first Scottish Cup final, 32 years to beat a top-flight side.

But after the second half the First Division side served up, underpinned by some of the most slapstick defending witnessed at Hampden as 12 minutes produced five goals, their followers might consider all this waiting worth it.

Gordon Chisholm's side had their lead pegged back three times but they came roaring back as Sean O'Connor and substitute John Stewart, the match-winner who began his career at Aberdeen, tore a tissue-paper opposing backline to shreds. The almighty din that the Dumfries club's 11,000 devotees created at the end, as 70-year-old chairman David Rae cavorted on the pitch with his players, was more ear-piercing than many crowds three times their number have created at Hampden.

"To see the joy on the face of the chairman was just a delight. It is history in the making," Chisholm beamed afterwards. "It has taken 58 years for the club to reach a second Scottish Cup semi-final, and now we are coming back to Hampden next month. I don't think I will ever top this achievement, although if we won the final that would. Just to think that this club is one that has tended to be languishing at the foot of the First Division or in the Second Division and now we have come this far in our first season of full-time football."

Yet, full-time for Queens does not appear to cover contesting the Scottish Cup final. "I think most of my players are out of contract on May 15. That is the reality," Chisholm said. "They are all saying to me 'gaffer, can I have an extension' but we will be all right. We will have four weeks without a game before the final (the First Division concludes on April 26] and we will have to sit down and look at that."

Queens will be back at Hampden on May 24 where their cup final opponents will be the winner of next weekend's semi-final, with St Johnstone waiting to play the winner of today's Partick Thistle v Rangers quarter-final replay. If Rangers were to progress, the Dumfries team would be assured of a place in next season's UEFA Cup.

In a season wherein Aberdeen have been consistently inconsistent, yesterday it looked as if they had left their game head at Pittodrie. Yet, it is hardly untypical that when an unreliable top flight side burdened by expectation face First Division opponents able to play without fear, the latter will settle quicker. The 22nd minute opening goal was reward for Queens' greater purpose and poise. And, in being the product of a defensive lapse, it was a harbinger of what was to come.

Goalkeeper Derek Soutar should have done better than flap at a Ryan McCann free-kick. But when he didn't, Andy Aitken was able to touch the ball back for Steve Tosh to cooly smash a side-footed effort high into the net. Calderwood's side took an age to administer themselves a metaphorical boot up the back side. It wasn't until they started using their pace on the flanks that they began to create problems for the backline at Hampden yesterday that – get this – was supposed be vulnerable. Certainly, Andrew Considine was able to easily rise above Jim Thomson and power in a ball nodded across goal by Scott Severin for Aberdeen's 35th-minute equaliser.

That was supposed to be that. With Queens having to send on Stewart only minutes before half time, the result of losing the craft and potency of top scorer Stephen Dobbie to injury, the general consensus was that Queens' best hopes of an upset had passed, and that the big team would recover from their scare to close out a brave final bid from lesser opponents. It proved not so much a case that no-one told that to Chisholm's men, so much as no-one told those Aberdeen players charged with preventing their opponents scoring.

It was wonderfully enjoyable as the question was begged in the second period: 'Defences, who needs defences?' And the answer came back: 'The two teams patrolling the Hampden turf'. On 48 minutes, O'Connor drove down the right flank and squared it inside, where Paul Burns, despite the three red jerseys within his vicinity, could not be stopped firing a shot past the helpless Soutar. Within three minutes, the scores were tied. Chris Maguire crossed from the left and Lee Miller forced a smart save from keeper Jamie MacDonald, only for Barry Nicholson to drill in the follow up.

Amazingly, after what seemed only seconds, Queens regained the lead. Stewart hoisted a ball forward that Considine failed to cut out, allowing O'Connor to bring the ball down, cut inside Zander Diamond, and plant an effort low into the corner of the net. The response from Aberdeen was instant. A Miller flick on from Nicholson centre in from the right allowed Considine, in acres of space, to make amends for his defensive shortcomings by heading past MacDonald from 12 yards.

"It could have been 6-4 or 7-5 and must have been a great game to watch," Chisholm said afterwards. It transpired to be a 4-3 win for his side when, on the hour mark McCann sent in a cross that Thomson flicked on and Stewart buried at the back post.

Calderwood, who sacrificed full-backs Jackie McNamara and Alan Maybury as he sought to end the to-and-fro, suffered the agonies of Diamond twice having efforts that struck the woodwork within seconds of the 70-minute mark and also penalty claims, involving Sone Aluko and Maguire, rightly rejected by referee Kenny Clark.

Queens clung on at the death, four minutes of added time included, but when the final whistle sounded, they could only glory in how good it felt to be alive.

QUEEN OF SOUTH

Jamie MacDonald

Assured after early fumble. Despite shipping three goals, he had little chance with all of them.

7

Ryan McCann

No wonder goal this time but he enjoyed his afternoon and coped well with the pace of Foster and Mackie.

7

Jim Thomson

Marshalled Miller and Maguire well but was beaten by Considine at Aberdeen's first goal. Fine tackling helped set the tone.

7

Andy Aitken

Composed lay-back for opening goal and overcame some sticky moments at the back as Aberdeen pegged them back.

6

Robert Harris

His inexperience showed at times but he stuck to his task and helped ensure that ultimately there was no way back for Aberdeen.

7

Paul Burns

Goal epitomised the Queens spirit, was composed enough to bury the rebound when Severin blocked his first shot.

8

Steve Tosh

Feisty in midfield and followed in well to be in position to score the opener. Tireless running, passing and vision to control play.

9

Neil MacFarlane

Ensured the Dons knew they were in a contest and was busy and profitable in the middle of the park, helping to boss that area.

8

Jamie McQuilken

Worked away and played his part in a fine team performance. Provided well for the forwards on several occasions.

6

Sean O'Connor

Used his physical attributes well. Enterprising running paid off when he pounced on Considine's mistake for third goal.

8

Stephen Dobbie

Always dangerous in and around the area and a constant pest to the Aberdeen defence until forced off injured in the 43rd minute.

7

SUBSTITUTES

John Stewart On just before half-time for the injured Dobbie and played a pivotal role in the final outcome. Always threatening and covered so much ground. His goal was the winner. 8

Eric Paton On in the final minute as Queens tried to use up valuable seconds. No time to contribute. 5

ABERDEEN

Derek Soutar

Possibly at fault for first goal. But was given little protection from the men in front as Queens sliced their way through.

5

Alan Maybury

Wasn't the only defender culpable but he couldn't stem the flow of Queens on the attack. Unable to clear the lines.

4

Zander Diamond

Unlucky not to score, hitting the bar and post. Made a last-ditch tackle on O'Connor with just over ten minutes remaining.

5

Andrew Considine

On the plus side, a couple of goals, but that was negated by a nightmarish Aberdeen defensive showing.

5

Jackie McNamara

Substituted midway through second half. Part of quartet that leaked goals too easily.

4

Barry Nicholson

Effort in stoppage time could have kept Aberdeen in it. Not at his best but tellingly still one of Aberdeen's best performers.

6

Scott Severin

Headed the ball back into the area for Considine to get the equaliser but wasn't able to get a grip of the midfield.

6

Richard Foster

Used his pace well down the flanks in first half but crosses were ineffectual and posted missing for most of the second half.

4

Sone Aluko

Had his pleas for a penalty late on ignored by the referee. Kept running at the First Division side and gave his side an option.

6

Chris Maguire

The form striker coming into the match, he wasn't able to truly pressurise the lower division side.

5

Lee Miller

Couple of chances on target and was a nuisance and served to unsettle the Queens side defence.

6

SUBSTITUTES

Darren Mackie On for McNamara in the 62nd minute to help peg the game back but couldn't turn things around. 6

Derek Young On for Maybury in the 81st minute as a desperate Aberdeen went for broke. 5

Time for the Fat Tomato and Shoddy Milne to go. This must be the worst result in the history of AFC alongside those other nightmares, Skonto Riga and Stenhoisemuir. A total clearout from chairman and manager downwards is needed to get AFC back on track.

Congratulations Queen of the South from a disgruntled Dons fan. You played fantastic and deserved your win. Best of luck for the final.

Dons - We need a central defender that is going to take charge of that terrible defense and a leader to take charge of the team on the pitch. Russel Anderson was both and although one player dosnt make a team him leaving has had a terrible effect on our team this year. We are a poor team and a poor season has been glossed over by a decent european run. I think most fans would have preffered a more solid and consistant SPL team though. But you get what you deserve I suppose - sign poor players - have a poor season.

Well done Queens though. Enjoy your cup final day

Congratulations QOS.
If you've any decency what so ever, then resign Calderwood. Not for this game, but for the complete lack of talent coming through the youth set up. Your inability to develop players, spot players or sign decent players. Your tactics are a joke and clearly you are unable to build team spirit. You are a complete fraud, just like that other waste of space, and friend of Chick Young, Alec Smith.

Celtic are in the top twenty richest clubs in Europe. Aberdeen are barely in the top 10000 richest teams in Europe. So as embarrassing as Aberdeen losing yesterday was, it's not on a similar scale to it being Celtic or Rangers. Pointing this out doesn't help either! Of course it proves how impressive it is that Aberdeen have won two European trophies as opposed to...

Firstly, let me congratulate the Doonhammers on a fantastic result for them. Always good to see the sheep getting gubbed (almost as good as seeing celtc fc getting pumped, which in turn is almost as good as seeing Rangers win!)

Now for the reality: "If Rangers were to progress, the Dumfries team would be assured of a place in next season's UEFA Cup".

This would be disasterous for Scotland's European coefficient. The powers that be should refuse to put QoS forward for Europe, and should give the place to the next highest placed SPL team instead. QoS should be then finacially compensated for the lost home gate receipt in payment for stepping aside.

Rangers & celtc fc (and even the sheepies) have done wonders for our coefficient this season (and last), but allowing QoS to represent Scotland in the UEFA Cup would undo all the good work they have achieved.

Errr - Try reading the post from #12 again (move your lips to the owrds if you have to)...

..He said that watching Celtic lose is ALMOST as good as watching Celtic win. Nothing wrong with that - Celtic fans will feel the same way about Rangers.

BTW - do any of you KNOW the meaning of the word "Bigot"? Hoping a team lose matches is hardly the action of a bigot, just a football fan who wants his team's biggest rivals to fail (again, just like Celtic fans).

Think you chaps need to work on those chips on your shoulders....

Well done to QoS - hope you enjoy your day out at Hampden.

#22 I really don't think it's appropriate for an OF supporter to lecture the rest of us on what constitutes bigotry.

You would, I imagine, deny that you were a bigot. Or that you indulge in sectarianism. But you must remember that your world consists of two football teams and when you look at the supporters of the only other team in your world you see your own thoughts and behaviours reflected. Of course you think its OK to be the way you do.

Listened to the game on the radio and watched the highlights last night and it just went to emphasise that there's not a huge difference between a 1st division team at their best and a poorly playing SPL team. Add to that that QoS have recently gone full time means that they are training more often and not after doing their day job. They also have a few seasoned pros who are more wily and have been there before in their younger days. And from their attacking style of play yesterday, you can see they didn't fear the 'big' team. Well done to them.

Brilliant result and performance from QOTS. I'm so happy they're in the final and not Zander 'ugly' Diamonds mob and their fans who are on a par with celtc fans for bhitterness and scummyness.

The C.L.O.W.N.S. (celtc lunatics overwrought with neuroligical spasms) having a go at post number 12 really ought to put their brain cell into gear before entering an adults debate.

Superb for the Queens though, UEFA cup football for them when Rangers take the Scottish Cup back where it belongs-the Ibrox trophy room.

Is it not the case that we will definitely have a 1st division side in Europe next year, regardless of whether Rangers progress?

Ranger will win (please please please) or be runners up in the SPL meaning they will compete in the CL. This means tat if they progress to the SC final then QOS qill qualify, but if Rangers go out to Partick or St Johnstone then that second Uefa cup spot would go to whoever won the SC final.

Is that right? Anyone know the rules on this?

I have already started writing my letter to the SFA about the refereeing at this game.

Pitch in excellent condition, though.

Good work by the groundsman. Worked through his teabreak to get it ready.

One win down six more to go

Two away games v Motherwell and DU - both winnable.

Four home games v Two v Rangers, One v Aberdeen and one v Hibs - all definitely WINNABLE!

Rangers - to go twice to Celtic Park - very losable games.

They also have to go to Fir Park - drawable

They also have to go to Pittodrie - losable

They also have to go to Easter Rd - drawable

If Celtic win their next three home games I think we may see the currants wobble big time.

It's still GAME ON!

Roll on Wednesday - I think this will be Rangers night of reckoning. Wednesday will be the defeat that has been coming to them for some time. If they avoid defeat you can be sure it will down to refs, luck or cheating.

Celts are up for it, roll on Wednesday.

How many times have Rangers been European Champions?
86

forbesy1873,

13/04/2008 18:05:39
So Tim you reckon that although Rangers have only lost 3 times and drawn 3 times in the last 30 games we have played this season they will lose 3 and draw 2 in their remaining 8 games and Celtic who have lost 5 and drawn 5 will win all of their games left?

I don't know whether to commend your positivity or laugh at your stupidity, hold on I know, I will laugh at you!

I think Rangers are in for the toughest section of their season - there are no easy games from here on in except St Johnstone in the semis.

Now look at this way - if Rangers lose on Wednesday and it is highly possible Celtic cut the lead to one point.

Forbes all I am saying is this is by no means over, not by a long shot. All season Rangers have had one hard game then four or five easy games - now it's crunch time and I can see them slipping up four times in their last 8 games.

I also think the run really favours Celtic - Tannadice being the one really tricky fixture but we won on our last visit up there.

In addtion Celtic looked angry and hungry today - they know they are the best team in Scotland and by hook and crook they are struggling to prove it.

It's still on and I expect a few twists yet.

Laugh all you want Forbes and remember your laughs in two weeks time when your lead is reduced and the heat is on. Just remember.

#94, how many user names do you have hombre....? personally i watched the aberdeen v qos, wba v watford, liverpool v blackburn and man utd v arsenal, did some gardening, looked after the kids.....and that was just the fun stuff...but let me tell you, we jambos are as perplexed as you...see this is new to us...no top six where we like to occasionally ruffle celtic's feathers, which sadly only sends the title to ibrox... most years we are qualifying or coming annoyingly close to qualifying for europe...getting ready for another scrap with the hibs, when they can drag their backsides in to it (you'd think they were regulars to hear them at the moment, but there have been other 3 derby seasons haven't there boys?)....and sometimes making sure we have tickets for hampden...it might not be much, but it generally suffices for us non-glory hunters...what about you
...?...much the same...?...thought so....unless of course you are a glory hunter....nah...just playing devil's advocate eh muchaisehole.....

Well done to QotS for such a great performance on Saturday. I'm surprised the Sheepees playing against a team in blue and white would have put up much stronger fight and made a game of it.

Should they play Rangers in the final, that the SFA or UEFA do conspire against QotS to play in UEFA cup next season especially when you look at some of the eastern European teams whose grounds are nothing short of holes.
Again well done the Doonhammers.

#12 I can't believe what i just read. Obviously being on the other side of the world, hanging upside down, has had some kind of detrimental effect. The Scottish Cup is one of the few events that dreams like this remain. Most other events are organised so that the little fish have very little chance. This is not about the money. Would rather play in the UEFA cup and get humped! If the system is going to rotate around the old firm then we might as well pack it all in and pick a side. Granted, the old firm have obviously the lion's share but that what makes events like these sweeter.
