Having smoked for 35 years and having quit in 1998, I can say from personal experience that smoking is a dangerous personal habit.
The danger attributed to the occasional inhalation of second-hand smoke is wildly exaggerated, however, and it is mostly a concession to gasbags and busybodies to make smoking illegal in most spaces, public or private.
If the argument were simply that "tobacco smoke stinks," then the owner of the establishment or space in question could decide whether to tolerate smoking or lose the patronage of those who don't care much for the smell of tobacco smoke.
I don't like the smell of tobacco smoke, so I go to places where I rarely or never encounter it. Such a terrible life I am forced lead! Boo hoo.

If I remember the legislation it states that an enclosed space constitutes a room enclosed on all four sides from floor to ceiling excluding windows and doors. Which means an open stage is not an enclosed space - however the risk of fire is more important in this respect methinks.

Surprised no-one has mentioned the 'indiscretion' of Charles Kennedy - alleged to be an educated person - caught smoking at the train window (must have been a very old train) and 'didn't think it was an enclosed space'. That was resolved 'informally' with the Transport Police after he had been a bit naughty (allegedly) with the train staff. Had it been Docherty, you or I, there would have been nothing informal about it. One law for the rich ....................The smoking debate - someone in a restaurant or bar smoking - other than leave I don't have an option - the smoker does. And, what's more hypocritical than the mother/father that doesn't smoke in the house because the kids are there but will smoke in a restaurant (before the ban) where kids are running around. Maybe there should be better facilities for those who choose to smoke, but most of the folk I know, including a lot of smokers, are very much in favour of it. So there.

Don't know about George Melly but Roy Castle's lung cancer was found not to be associated with smoke. And he is the ONLY one quoted (two if you count George Melly) even though he died, what, 15 years ago ... if they can't do better than that in putting names to numbers I am not very convinced.

The carcinogens are in the smoke, and when you hold a cigararete in your hand it continues to burn no matter what. A pop artist that smokes indicates poor form and younger people will be seeing this. Apart from the fact that having a lighter in the car does not oblige you to smoke (and that it can also be used as a 12v mobile phone charger) you are doing more damage to your own health by sitting in a car that is spewing out carbon dioxide and various other hydrocardon by-products.

I was in Glasgow once. There was a young man at the bus station, the buses that travel to London. The young man was standing on the tarmac trying to get the bus driver to tell him somthing. I personally am not a fan of Pete Docherty, but I am a fan of any celebrity who can give a bit of clout for smokers, there must be thousands of A to Z listed celebs who smoke that can afford to kick-up about this outrageous ban, we all know there is not one documented case that passive smoking kills, the same as global warming appears to be a bit of a farce,however the vast population are suckered in by these so called reports from so called experts, I know smoking coul kill me I am reminded everytimr I look at a packet of cigs.What winds up thousands of smokers is the fact that we are now being forced out into the elements to smoke, the elderly will suffer especially in the winter months, I wonder if the so called experts will do any studies on their fatalities, I think not. 80% of private organisations, especially pubs and clubs, would have opted to allow smoking in there establishments, and I am sure would have introduced seperate areas with adequate ventilation systems if the goverment had made this law, but they were not given the freedom of choice, pre the ban there was already a case of a woman who was murdrerd outside the grounds of a hospital she worked at whilst having a smoke (fact) lets hope there are not to many flight delays at airports, where there is nowhere to go, I can visulise many smoke related incidents that will not be published, the press appear to blanket the smokers side, as for me I intend to leave the country I love and move to Spain where there is a much more softer view on smoking.Roger Foulser.

To BurningMan you sound like a fungi I take it your a non smoker?all I ask for along with thousands of other smokers are well ventilated enclosed areas, seperated from non smokers we will all get the best of both worlds, is that to much to ask?
i feel burning man is educatedly challenged by his rather stupid comment of good riddance, by the way im a non smoker, but i feel we need a choice, and our choices are being taken away, if i want to go into a pub where people smoke thats my choice, i f i want to go into a pub where people dont smoke thats my choice, lets just say if burning man was in a non smoking pub, i would opt to go into the smoking pub!!! get a life, for your information on health and smoking, the biggest cause of cancer is in food, are you gona stop eating??? i doubt it, enjoy your life instead of saying to topnotes good riddance, i wish you would leave this country then maybe we might enjoy our lives instead of being restricted in what we enjoy!!!

what happened in Toronto. They told restaurants and bars they could do the seperate ventilated space thing, and some went ahead and spent the money to do it. Then a few years later they told them that that wasn't enough and banned it all anyway. Some people were peeved after spending such money. I hate smoke...my method for helping addicts quit involves Maxwell's little hammer and an anvil. BANG a few times and you won't even be able to hold the lighter....HA HA , I hope those that want to quit have all the luck and WP.
