cuts at the beeb are anti scottish the qustion is that 99 per of scots will sit back and let this happen as they do with every thing else it is just case of a corprate world of pay up and shut up and all this is happening under labour.
BBC Scotland provides a very valuable service, not only in Scotland, but in presenting current information and culture to the world through the internet. I use it regularly. It would be sad if this window was diminished or closed.
The question is, can they dumb down Radio Scotland any further? I have had to refugee to Radio 4, as the inanities now being broadcast are mind-numbing.Does the BBC think we in Scotland enjoy the drivel it is now pumping out?
Another example of a London based organisation treating Scotland as a municipal backwater. When, oh when will you guys wake up to this? Are there no entrepreneurs in Scotland who can start an international TV and radio station?
Anne's comment is spot-on. The quality of Radio & BBC Scotland's output has been diluted to such an extent that I cannot bear to listen to either Good Morning Scotland's witterings or Newsnight Scotland's banal, badly researched, slovenly interviewed, parochial excuse for in-depth current affairs.
Blair Jenkins has shown courage and integrity, and I hope others show the same backbone in the face of unrealistic financial demands. Don't resort to nationalistic blame-culture whinings (Andy/Mike), it's all about budgets affecting journalistic quality. The same is happening across all the English BBC regions, are they blaming a UK 'London' government, led by so many Scots?
Ah well, at least the London-based Radio 4 continues to be of decent quality, or is that only because of the influence from its leading broadcast journalists, Scots James Naughtie and Eddie Mair, and Welshman John Humphrys?
Whit wey daes BBC Scotland no get aw the licence siller gethered in Scotland?
yes Robert Gray Comment 1 has the answer. The scots are far to apathetic. Just pay up.and Tom from Nairn I agree with lets all hold back 30% of our licence fee. See what happens then!!!!
The BBC a national broadcaster? What a joke. Newsnight Scotland is a prime example - arbitrarily chopped one night last week to make way for a debate on the Lib Dem leadership which was (surprisingly enough) dominated by English issues, it deems Tommy Sheridan's libel case important enough to cover every night, but has to rely on a print journalist in order to do so. Pathetic.
The Beeb could cut some duplication - but also have a look at the value for money that it gets for some of the contracts it has. What's the DG getting paid ? What's Jonathan Ross on ?
It's closed its current affairs discussion boards in Scotland. These were amongst the busiest in all the "regions" - yet boards for places outside of the UK (such as Guernsey, Jersey and the Isle of Man) are allowed to continue despite there being sometimes weeks between posts. Why were these ones closed but one for discussions on the River City storylines was kept open ? Was it because the political views expressed on them did not coincide with the views of BBC Scotland's London masters ? Who knows.
Scottish users of these BBC boards have now set up their own independent forum and it's well used with 116 registered users. Have a look. And if IT can be run on volunteer time, surely the BBC's ones weren't a huge drain on resources.

I didnt know there was a BBC Scotland ,I thought it was BBC Glasgow! Also its about time it was totaly independant as I wish we all were.London always dictates and Scotland jumps to it.
SO WHEN DO WE ALL WAKE UP FROM THIS GREAT SCOTTISH SLEEP THE BBC IS SOMETHING WE ALL PAY FOR YET WE HAVE NO CONTROL OVER WHY WHY DO WE LET THIS HAPPEN SURLY ITS TIME FOR A PUBLIC INQUIRY ALL IN FAVOUR SAY I.
There is waste within the BBC, but like the NHS, it is likely to be in the tiers of management and not nenecessarily the sharp-end.
I do however recall one example of waste: footbal matches being covered by three separate BBC broadcasting teams. One on TV; two on Radio - "Five Live" with a Scottish commentator and Radio Scotland with, obviously, Scottish (different) Commentators.
BBC might consider scrapping some of the rubbish they broadcast on BBC 1.
Well said Stewart. Newsnight Scotland is a disgrace, the sooner it and the minority programmes in gaelic are given the chop the better. As for River City, does anyone watch it? To be honest, very little produced by BBC Glasgow is worth watching.
Although i agree with most of what has been said here, Mike's comment(No.7) i feel is the only solution. If we don't turn around this constant downgrading of anything Scottish, we risk losing the very reason why people come here from all over the world and more importantly our own identity. In my late teens and through my twenties i roved about all over Scotland, the combination of superb scenery and the characters of the people of all ages is something that makes me truly proud to be Scottish. We have a wealth of history that few nations can match and a formidable reputation through that of creating solutions to problems.......and lets face it.....London ain't cutting it
Nothing to add other than my support for all the views expressed above.... BBC Scotland's flagship 18.30 TV news programme is now so bad I only switch it on at about 5 to 7 to watch the weather and then I watch Channel 4's 7pm news which is generally excellent...
Even the BBC's News 24hr multiscreen programme has dropped its business channel in favour on one on entertainment...... What do these people really think they're up to !
I won't miss anything from the glasgow bbc........ why can't they realise the rest of Scotland does not want to hear about glasgow or its football teams..........its boring the rest of the nation rigid !!
Before devolution there was a need for more Scottish programming, especially in news and current affairs, but with the Scottish parliament reconvened there is now an even greater need. Instead we get cuts. I now take the BBC as seriously as they take Scotland.
Why are we all surprised? BBC ( British means english, or Scotland, if we Scots are winning,And, yes , I did mean to use the lower case e) The broadcasting bit, refers to Britain, and the english living in Scotland, are not interested in Scottish news or views, or programs, So why bother transmitting them? C, stands for the cash to the shareholders, (mostly english, or European no doubt) who could not give a damn, as long as Wimbledon, the Cricket, & East enders, go out on time ,Old Boy! Any way, Glasgow is only just round the corner from Edinburgh & Aberdeen to hear some of statements from south of the border!
As someone who has traveled around Scotland, and loves all of where I have (I'm sorry, but I haven't gotten to the Orkneys or Shetland yet, but I love ya anyway!), I felt the BBC Radio Scotland programming was fine, especially since there was a seperate station for those of us who prefer classical music (Thank you!). However, it has been 11 years since I was over on your side of the pond in Scotland (yes, I know - WAY too long!). So, currently, I can't personally speak to the quality of either the Radio or TV level of BBC Scotland, but I CAN speak to the internet side of it, and I find that it covers all of Scotland (not adequately enough for me personally), enough to get by for my "Scotland fix" as needed, as long as I can't be there in person. So, for comments #'s 3 & 6, better check the web version out before you complain too bloody much.
Re CUTS to Scottish News programmes
Why can't Scotland have its own Scottish Broadcasting Company. The SBC
The BBC is becoming so poor and full of boring reality programmes...
Who knows we could have intelligent programmes again and it would be worth watching TV once again.
This is what happens when we do not have full Independence. Just think what Scotland would be like if the money that the English Goverment receives from Oil revenue was spent solely on Scotland - New Roads, New Rail, New Hospitals, New Schools our own TV network the possibilities are endless. Possibly even lower taxation
Maybe there is a Glasgow bias, but as an exiled Scot living in darkest Surrey, I value being able to see Scottish news, and hear Scots accents, on the internet broadcasts. They better not cut those - they kept me sane during the world cup frenzy down here! This seems to be another example of the eBC pandering to the majority rabble of sassenach dunderheids. If you object too, do like me, and fire off a complaint to them at http://www.bbc.co.uk/complaints/.
