PRINCE William is to join Royal Navy patrols searching for drug runners crossing Caribbean waters during an eight-week attachment with the senior service.
He will be assigned tomorrow to HMS Iron Duke.

British vessels have seized around 20 tonnes of cocaine in the North Atlantic in the past 18 months.

But the 25-year-old heir to the throne is unlikely to be put in the firing line.

Rear Admiral Robert Cooling, the assistant chief of Naval Staff, said that if he put himself in the shoes of the Iron Duke's commander, William would not join a boarding party if there was a chance he could be shot at.

"If it's an entirely permissive boarding and we're searching for drugs, for example, or indeed we're validating the flag state of a vessel of interest, then by all means, no difficulties there," said Cooling.

The prince is said to be looking forward to the secondment to the frigate, which is aimed at teaching him about the navy's ethos and capabilities as he prepares for his future role as head of the armed forces.

The attachment would be rigorous and challenging, said Cooling.

"It will be a real thrill and privilege – not a pain in the ass – for the ship's company," he joked. "If we treated him like some super VIP and tailored a programme for him and walked around on egg shells, then that would be difficult.

"But he's not – he's going to come just like any other young officer and do all the things that young officers get involved in."

Pictures showing a smiling Sub-Lieutenant Wales, in a dark double-breasted naval uniform with peaked cap, were released yesterday.

William is following in the footsteps of his father, the Prince of Wales, uncle the Duke of York, and grandfather, the Duke of Edinburgh, who all served in the Royal Navy.

Commander William Entwisle, a former equerry to Charles, said: "I went to visit him with the First Sea Lord (Admiral Sir Jonathon Band] about three weeks ago and he's enormously looking forward to the attachment."

The prince – an officer in the Household Cavalry's Blues and Royals – will spend a few weeks learning navigation, boat handling and safety. He will briefly visit the Royal Marines and Air Fleet Arm, where he will have a chance to fly its helicopters.

He will then spend five weeks on the Iron Duke, the current North Atlantic patrol ship, providing security for UK territories in the West Indies. Cooling said the frigate was chosen after "operational security considerations", but mainly because it offered the prince the "best grounding" in naval activities. Other warships in the Gulf were in "stand down" or transit.

"I'm fairly confident he will do just fine in that environment. There's nothing to be shy about if you get seasick; the best of us did – Nelson got seasick."

Prince Harry, 23, a lieutenant in the Blues and Royals, will spend the summer on aid operations in Africa.

When will this sycophancy end?

When there is a Scots Republic.

For us I mean. The poor English will still have to put up with it.

Another wee adventure holiday for this parasite, at the taxpayers expense.

The sooner we become an independent republic, the better.

Get a sense of proportion you lot.

If you REALLY want to query a waste of money in this country, there are no end of goverment departments you can start off with.

And if you want to be all Scottish Nationalist about it, why don't you query the disgraceful and totally unacceptable waste of our money that is keeping 22,000 Scottish druggies, who are just too stupid to say no, on meth at our expense.

Now they ARE a load of parasites and a waste of taxpayers money.

Why does William as King need this direct experience. He may become 'head of the armed forces' but only in a titular sense. The real head of the armed forces is the Chief of Staff. Does he/she by the way, go through this same process of experiencing the three wings of the armed forces?

I totally agree with the comments made by no 5 why is our money being wasted by the government on 22,000 druggies on Meths. Its our money we earned it, yet, here they go again targeting the working man denying him his freedom of choice in how he lives his life spends his money etc now to attack the national peace offering ( for the wife when one has had a little too much amber nectar or arrives home later than expected ) take aways and fish suppers etc cannot be afforded regularly they are bought now and again as a treat, And neither the government nor anyone else should be dictating what we are allowed and what we are not we gained the legal freedom of choice when we turned 18 did we not ?

What a bunch of surly, unruly posters most of you are.

At least HRH The Prince William of Wales is getting PRACTICAL experience in a field that is important to the whole world - the international drug trade cartel.

How ungrateful and small-minded most of you are. He is doing a job, getting the going rate of pay, and perhaps putting his life at risk.

Do any of you numpties sitting on your ars*s and munching crisps washed down with gallons of sugary and calorie-laden fizzy pop followed by triple-cheese pizzas get off your backsides and do as much as he is doing? I think NOT!

#12 TCW. Not that I munch crisps, drink sugary lolly water or eat pizzas, but I'd be more than happy to go on all these adventure holidays they are giving that wee parasite, provided that, like him, I get it all paid for me by the taxpayer.

As for him getting "practical experience" of anything, what's the point? It's not as if he will actually be making any use of it. It is highly unlikely that he will be involved with catching drug smugglers on his many skiing holidays and similar.

He, like the rest of his family, is a parasite, with a playboy lifestyle funded by the taxpayer.

12 Tim and is he the only one on the ship or doing the training. do we care for him any more than any of the others?

having a gripe about the wee german lairdies from buckingham house is not the same as disrespecting those that choose to follow the idiot orders issued from the uk government to go shoot and kill.

Some of you are calling William a parasite and saying some pretty nasty things about him.

Might I suggest to you all that you start considering the damage this government has done to this country and re-direct your vitriol in their direction.

William is doing nothing more than any other Junior Officer in the forces would be REQUIRED to do as part of their training. Yes, he is doing it in all three services, but at the end of the day he will be expected to participate in activites involving all three services and it would be a lot better if he actually knew a bit about them.

As an example, a junior Sub-Leiutenant in the Navy would be required to spend at least a year (and maybe more) on an operational warship, would go with it whereever it was sent and would learn about navigation and operations. He/She would not be put in the "fireing line" as they would not have sufficient training and/or skills.

He is doing nothing different to that so forget about slagging him off and turn your attention to a groups of people who actually deserve it.

#13, Gaga,

In the past, by your own admission, you were undoubtedly the true parasite living off the foreign lands of the butcher’s apron cumulating and influencing the English-speaking world that you so claim to detest. All that cash must have been hard to swallow with your principles, eh?

I put it to you sir that given the opportunity you would do it again. Hypocrite.

BTW I wonder how much tourist revenue the royal family brings to the economy every year? Not to mention the tireless public duties they perform. Our international image. Lets not mention the sense of history that embraces us. While we are at it, why not eradicate any other aspect of our history that you or others may not like?

Once again you prove the stereotype of the little man with the beard that struggles to make or retain mates. Big man!
