RADIO 1 DJ Chris Moyles declared he was "the best" as he revealed that he plans to renew his contract with the BBC, it was reported yesterday.
Rumours have circulated that the self-proclaimed "saviour" of Radio 1 faced the axe from his popular prime-time breakfast show. But he told a newspaper that he intended to sign a one-year deal to remain with the station until the summer of 2010 at l
east.
Moyles, 35, below, said: "I'm not ready to come off and Radio 1 aren't ready to take me off. Apart from anything, there's no one else. I'm the best.
"Scott Mills (the station's tea-time presenter] would be all right – but he wouldn't be as good as me. But it doesn't make any difference, because I am not going."
His comments appeared to confirm the BBC's denial this month that there were plans to take the Leeds funnyman off air.
Moyles joined Radio 1 in 1997 and took over the flagship morning role in 2004 from Sara Cox, soon adding one million listeners.
Figures released by radio body Rajar for the final quarter of 2008 showed The Chris Moyles Show had 7.3 million listeners – up from 7.02 million in the previous quarter and a slight drop from 7.31 million the previous year.
This year has seen him make a series of controversial remarks on-air, including jokes about Auschwitz concentration camp and gay singer Will Young.
In December 2008, Moyles apologised for seeming to suggest on his show that Polish people make good prostitutes.
