COUNCIL chiefs last night warned the public to avoid contact with the water in the Firth of Forth after it emerged that sewage had been released into the estuary.
The contamination has been blamed on a mechanical failure at Edinburgh's Seafield sewage works, which led to a thousand litres of sewage a second being fed into the firth for more than 24 hours.

Edinburgh council warned people to stay out of the
water, wash their hands thoroughly if they have visited the area, and not to eat fish or shellfish caught there because of the risk of bacterial diseases.

Thames Water, which runs the sewage works, was yesterday trying to install a temporary pump to stop the sewage entering the Forth, which was expected to be in place by midnight.

Mesh around the pipes meant there was no danger of solid waste entering the river, the company said.

However, Thames Water it they had no option but to allow contaminated water to filter through.

A spokeswoman said: "We were unable to repair the pump on site. The breakdown meant the sewage could not be directed to the treatment facility.

"We had to allow an emergency outflow into the Forth - if we had not done that it would have been directed on to land.

"It was discharging about one thousand litres a second, however it was very, very heavily diluted by the time it entered the water.

"And we have screening so no solids would have been able to get into the Forth."

She added: "We will now have to take the regular equipment away to get that repaired and hopefully it will be back within the next couple of weeks."

It is the first time in the seven years Thames Water has run the sewage system at Seafield that such an outbreak has affected the Forth.

A spokesman for the Scottish Environment Protection Agency (Sepa) said: "It is too early to tell what the extent of the impact has been. We will need to keep an eye on the station and see what happens."

Warning notices were posted along the banks of the Forth yesterday. Environmental health officers have been carrying out beach inspections but have not found any signs of sewage or contaminated water.

It is not known how great a part of the Forth has been affected. People who use the firth for recreational pursuits such as yachting have been advised to take care and avoid contact with the water.

Edinburgh council leader Ewan Aitken said: "We are very concerned about this incident and are working closely with Scottish Water, Thames Water, Sepa and neighbouring authorities to resolve the issue. We urge people to ensure they maintain high standards of personal hygiene and do not take anything home from the beach."

People who remain concerned about the dangers have been advised to contact the council's environmental health service.

The incident comes less than a month after Scottish Water unveiled a three-year £130m project to upgrade its network of treatment facilities across the Lothians.

That includes the £50m Edinburgh Drinking Water Project to improve the quality of water in the capital and the upgrading of the city's water treatment works at Alnwickhill, which have been operating since 1879.

The water treatment works at Fairmilehead will either be upgraded or replaced with a purpose-built facility in Midlothian.

Thousands of residents in West and East Lothian will also get improved drinking water.

It's a pump - mechanical things break down - there aint nothing sinister about it.

However, every new flat that has been built contains at least one toilet, so there are more and more turds arriving at this location every month.

Now, that can't be good.

Let's get this farcical quango under some resal management.
We pay a pretty penny for our water related services and we get a third rate service.
For example we pay on average twice as much as someone in the south east of england where they have little water.

I cant remember the Scottish Parliament selling Seafield to Thames Water.

#1 foggy - the stench has been complained about in that area for over 20 years and nothing has been done about it. It's not bad every day - I think it possibly depends on which way the wind's blowing - but on bad days it's REALLY bad. I wouldn't like to live with that!

thames water have such an amazingly professional attitude to the way the run water in London, I am surprised an accident like this could have happened(!!)

actually they filled the thames with sewage a year or two back, so edinburgh is the equal of london

Bloody disgrace. I can't understand that they appear to have absolutely no containment or overflow pools for this sort of incident.
And for crying out loud, how long does it take to:
1/ realise the pump is broken
2/ get it bloody well fixed and/or replace it.

What's Thames Water doing running a plant in Scotland? As for a "professional company", where does that argument come from? As well as allowing the sewage out into the sea, this company can't keep control of the clean stuff either. Most recent figures show they lose 900,000,000 litres of clean, fresh water a day in through their leaky network of pipes in London.

Yet somehow the Scottish Tories (and the Lib Dems) are arguing that privatising water further in Scotland is the answer!?! Investment needed, not stretching old equipment to keep the shareholders happy.

AD,

I noted the claim of "no solids", but a dinny believe them!!

A feel £100k per person, is a mair appropriate amount for the evil Edinburger turds now contaminating the golden fringe of the Kingdom!!

A Voting Floater,

The wee lassie interviewed by Radio Forth said that they had to let it into the Firth of Forth or it would have spilled into the streets or even backed up through our cludgies!

Talk about getting your own back, eh!!!!!

So Thames Water provides water related services in the East of Scotland, and Scottish Power provides gas and electricity in the Thames valley?

I'm starting to feel right at home down here...

Not a word from the Green Party MSPs. They are obviously selective about pollution.

If I drop a sweetie paper on the street, I am liable to be fined. If I overturn my truck full of toxic waste on the highway, i can be sent to jail.. BUT..... if I am Thames Water and pump 1000 litres of sewage per second into the Forth estuary I am not liable for any sanction... Am i missing something?

I've been joking about this, but I've just heard the flow is still to be stemmed. The figure quoted was 100 million ltr of raw sewage!!!!

Not a joking matter anymore!!:(

These things happen when you have a private company skimping on their obligations to enhance profits.Scottish water are as much to blame as they pay Thames Water to do the job for them. Where is the supervision ?

All the more reason to stop Forth Ports proposal for
ship to ship oil transfer in the firth of Forth.
same type of scenario, same profit motivation to cut corners. An accident waiting to happen.

#22 Tatties: Good point, what happened to "polluter pays"???
Please don't beat me with a big stick, but this is one of the areas where the dreaded "Europe" is actually some use. Isn't there some EU law about polluters being made to foot the bill for the mess they make?
Interesting too that with elections so close by nobody seems to be rushing to show any green credentials by condemning this (where are you Greens?).
