PRINCESS Diana's former lover Hasnat Khan has spoken publicly for the first time about the woman who dubbed him "Mr Wonderful".
Last night Dr Khan revealed that Diana's death continued to haunt him, making him want to scream at times.
He admitted that he had been approached to give evidence at the inquest into the princess's death, but added he is unlikely to do so unless
he is obliged to.
Khan said he was breaking his silence because of speculation that he would attend the inquest to give evidence. But he admitted that events 10 years ago still dominated his thoughts. "Sometimes I feel like screaming," he said. "There have been very bad times. I have moved on, but it keeps coming back."
The 48-year-old heart specialist recently separated from his 29-year-old wife, but has declined to say why the arranged marriage broke down.
He similarly refuses to talk about the circumstances surrounding his split with Diana, whom he first met in 1995.
But he does pay tribute to her and talks of the esteem in which he holds the late princess, criticising her memorial fountain in the process.
"Creating a fountain is not how you should remember a great person. You put great people up as high as possible. Look at Nelson," he said.
Talking about the inquest currently taking place in London, Khan said he had received a letter suggesting that the coroner may want him to appear, but it is unlikely that he will attend.
He said: "My lawyers advised me I do not have to attend. If that's their advice, I won't go. But if I find I have to go according to the law, I will go."
The surgeon started dating the princess in 1995, two years before her death.
She became besotted with him, describing him as the "love of her life", and he was a regular visitor to her Kensington Palace apartment.
Cricketer-turned-politician Imran Khan later revealed that Diana asked him to act as a "marriage broker", adding that she was "very deeply in love" with him. Eager to absorb his Muslim culture, the princess began reading the Koran and thought about converting to Islam. But Hasnat Khan decided their relationship must end.
