MPS are pushing for a pay hike of up to 66% to take their salaries to £100,000 a year, it was reported last night.
MPs have written to the Senior Salaries Review Body, which sets their pay, calling for a big rise on their £60,277 annual salary. They believe their salaries have been falling behind other professions and want a settlement to achieve parity with GPs or council chiefs.

Raising MPs' pay to £100,000 would increase their total pay bill from £39m to £65m.

Some Labour and Tory MPs were said to have written individually to the SSRB, while the 1922 Committee, representing Tory backbenchers, was also reported to have made a submission although this was said not to include a specific figure.

Anything approaching such a large increase would inevitably cause a massive public outcry and is likely to be resisted by the leaderships of both the main parties.

Fair enough! Just as soon as the minimum wage is set at £15 per hour, and ALL pensioners receive the same pension provisions that the MP's give themselves. After all, they will be 'retired' and doing nothing (apart from directorships or positions on Quangos) - so why should they be given more than people who have actually worked all their lives?

Let's get rid of MSPs and MEPs and make these greedy pigs at Westminster work for their money. Otherwise no pay rise at all.

Why would someone who has never had an original thought and cannot restrain themselves when spending other peoples money expect to be paid the same as a "professional"? The first step on this road has to be a way of measuring the output or contribution made to society by individual MPs. The next is the rigorous application of best value and best practice rules laid down by themselves for public sector contractors and a close third is to tell them if they want comparable money then get some training and get a job in the real world instead of mooching free hospitality day and night. Shameless, workshy (inner) tossers

They are simply not worth the money. Hypocrites, liars, arrogant egomaniacs without a care for the people they allegedly represent. It would be better for us all if they were put up against a wall and shot. It would certianly improve Britains cash flow!

The public should be told which MPs are agitating for this unwarranted pay rise. Then, campaign for their parties to de-select them or punish them at the next election.
MPs should all be paid an average wage and that would still flatter most of them.

They believe their salaries have been falling behind other professions and want a settlement to achieve parity with GPs or council chiefs..

Read that paragraph again! See anything odd?

They feel that their salaries are falling behind other professions.

Here is the thing though you dim witted SMP's...You CHOSE to be a public servant, you chose to serve the people as a representative of their parliament. You are NOT a private sector employee, therefore, get used to earning public office salaries or go get a job in the private sector..

"MPS are pushing for a pay hike of up to 66% to take their salaries to £100,000 a year, it was reported last night. "

The majority of people would be lucky to get 6% let alone 66%....As we struggle to pay more and more tax to our elected government all they can do is invent new schemes to gather even more money from us with little return (road pricing) or line their pockets with huge expenses..

#2 terry, well said!
MSP salaries are based on 87.5% of Wesminster MP salaries. Expect some disingenuous tut tutting from Edinburgh!

They get cheap drink at the Bar and a good place to sleep when they attend meeting and they want paid a wage rise as well they are overpaid as it is, let them work for a change and prove they are worth what they get at the moment.
