MOTHERWELL 2
Porter 55; Zaliukas 70 og

SO THIS is what we will get if Mark McGhee is handed the keys to Hampden Park. A touch of inspiration, more than a dash of tactical acumen and a liberal splash of bloody-mindedness. All those qualities were to the fore yesterday as Motherwell deservedly came from behind at the break to climb to the heady heights of third place in the SPL.

They did so by taking the fight to Hearts during a second half of unremitting commitment and tempo in blizzard conditions that should have been more suited to half of the home team and their employers.

If this match is any guide, a McGhee Scotland side would be a markedly different proposition to the one that has just completed the Euro 2008 qualifying campaign. Not that McGhee would change the playing personnel; judging by the evidence of this season he is more than capable of increasing performance without wholesale changes. The events at Tynecastle were a classic example of how McGhee works.

"I was surprised and disappointed by us in the first half," said McGhee. "Hearts came out well and looked like a decent team, and it intimidated us. We looked as if we felt we weren't as good as Hearts and I had to tell the players that at half-time. I also changed to four in midfield because we were losing the battle there and I got a great response. I thought we deserved to win. This shows we have the resolve to come to places like this and win from behind. We shouldn't fear anyone."

Motherwell have been transformed since McGhee's arrival. Rather than the adrenaline-fuelled passion of Terry Butcher's youngsters or Maurice Malpas's relegation-threatened desperados, they play with a compelling mix of precision, discipline and ambition. This is a tidy outfit that has the best away record in the SPL. It is more than the sum of its parts, and there are few higher compliments you can pay any manager.

David Clarkson and Ross McCormack in particular have been brought to life by McGhee, the two mercurial talents playing off point man Chris Porter. After the break their input was absolutely crucial yesterday. Both were relatively quiet before the interval, with Hearts' central defensive duo of Marius Zaliukas and Christophe Berra quietly efficient, but the width of the Motherwell front men provided a structure that Hearts struggled to break down.

That Hearts drew first blood after just 12 minutes was largely down to the verve and invention of Andrew Driver. He finished off a flowing move that came down the right wing, but his pace down the left wing gave Motherwell endless headaches before the break. The goal came from a move that had its origins in Hearts' defensive solidity. Zaliukas cut out a pass down the Motherwell left flank to Porter, and wasted no time in working the ball down the line to Robbie Neilson. When the Hearts right-back played the ball in behind the visitors' defence for Andrius Velicka to run on to, the yellow line had been breached and the Lithuanian striker had plenty of time to pick out the unmarked and onrushing Driver at the back post. The young Englishman's finish was of the highest quality, volleying the ball back across the prone figure of Graeme Smith and into the corner for the opening goal, his sixth of this campaign and Hearts' 499th SPL goal.

Motherwell's obduracy and spirit were impressive, and kept clear chances for Hearts at a premium. Indeed, the only other time the home side threatened to extend their lead was when some neat interplay between the diminutive Andrius Ksanavicius and Velicka saw the striker through on goal with only Smith to beat, only to flick the ball against the Motherwell keeper.

If the first half was all about Driver and Hearts, the second was dominated by the Motherwell duo of Clarkson and McCormack up front and by the midfield drive of Stephen Hughes. With McGhee bolstering the midfield with an extra man, all three were transformed after the break, their joint contribution the catalyst for a Motherwell revival that swept aside increasingly hesitant Hearts. It began within two minutes of the restart when McCormack kidded referee Craig Thomson into awarding a free kick with a dive worthy of inclusion in next year's Beijing's Olympics before blasting the ball just over the bar.

But it was Clarkson who was largely instrumental in getting Motherwell back on level terms ten minutes after the break. He pounced when Zaliukas failed to clear an innocuous Stephen Craigan cross to the back post, hooking his leg around the defender to deliver a cross which a grateful Porter tucked away in the corner with a nicely cushioned header for the visitors' opening goal.

It was no surprise when Motherwell extended their lead 15 minutes later after long a period of domination. Again it was sloppy defending around the fringes that did for Stevie Frail's men, Hearts failing to clear despite several opportunities, the ball eventually falling to Steven McGarry right on the bye-line. His cross looked to be too deep for McCormack at the back post but the striker curled his foot around the ball and guided it netbound with the outside of his boot from what had looked like too tight an angle, Zaliukas applying the final touch as he tried to clear.

Even then the game wasn't beyond doubt and just two minutes later Eggert Jonsson's driven shot from outside the box cracked off the Motherwell crossbar. Despite a frantic final few minutes, that was to be the last hurrah. As the sodden pitch disintegrated so did Hearts' resolve and eventually their challenge.

Frail complained before the game that the last two matches had finished 1-1; what he would have given for that scoreline yesterday. As for Motherwell, their main ambition for the immediate future will be to keep hold of their manager. Whether that now happens is surely out of their hands.

MAN OF THE MATCH: Stephen Hughes. Anonymous and lethargic in the first half, after the break he was the driving force behind Motherwell's revival.

ASIDE: Hearts announced that the long-awaited planning application for a revamped Tynecastle will be lodged with Edinburgh City Council this week.

If McGhee is to get the Scotland job, I hope the SFA will at least wait until the end of the season to appoint him. It's not like Scotland have any important games before then, and it would be a shame to deprive Motherwell fans the opportunity to see where they'd finish in the league were they to keep turning in this sort of performance.

It's only a game,

So Hearts stay in 7th after letting Motherwell rain on their parade.

I said last week that the most improved teams this season were Motherwell and Dundee Utd however the former have gone from strength to strenght under McGhee.

Hearts on the other hand have failed to deliver once again at Tynie and will have a few weeks to go if they can get into the top 6

Gorgie Son...,

We drop our best players from last week, Ruben and Tall. Why? Fans shafted yet again.

Hearts have worst starting line up.

Miko and Zaliukas is good player but Ruben and Tall not play is big bad.

Motherwell have excellent season. I hope Stephen Hughes and Clarkson and McCormack In Scotland A team.

I must declare we have a team here possibly capable of a 3rd or 4th place finish this season and a european slot. This would be great financially for MFC as they are one of very few teams in Scotland who are making money at the end of the season rather than losing it. Ross McCormack who I think would be a better partner to McFadden than Celtics Miller will mature into the Scotland squad eventually, you can see it in him and when sold will bring even more cash to fir park.Good times ahead I hope and McGhee (if he stays) is just the man to do it for us.Credit to Hearts yesterday because they were all over us at times and the OG was already going in so dont go tough on Zaliukas. C U AT THE CUP.

Are you watching Vlad - it si not rocket science you know. You put in one suitably qualified coach who knows what he is doing and let him get on with his job. Well done Mark McGhee - a blind man can see that you know how to coach and more importantly motivate a team of grown-up footballers. First thing you do is not to drop two of your best players from the previous match (ie Ruben and Tall) and especially for two underachievers such as that waste of space Miko and a clearly out of touch Stewart. I bet McGhee wont be dropping his two best players next week.It is all about psychology and man management and you keep your high achievers motivated and your under- achievers hungry - again not rocket science. You also do not change your goalkeepers every week. OK I will sign off as I could go on and on and on. Let me know Vlad etc if you want to hear more as believe you me there is a lot,lot more to say !!!!

7

It's only a game,

How many times are we going to see posts on here and the Scotsman about how Hearts need a Manager? Vlad has already said through Charlie Mann that he is the happiest he has been for a long time with the way things are progressing at Tynie. He must be looking at another team at the moment because to drop Tall and Ruben was absolutely incompetant, and why did Kurskis get the nod ahead of the other two who have been in goals all season.

The fax machine is alive and kicking at riccarton.

I said a long time ago that this Motherwell side would not be pushed around by anyone. Mark McGhee has done a fantastic job there, and as mentioned above, Mr Romanov should wake up and smell the coffee.
There are so many puzzling teaam selections these days, that I've become insensitive to them, however I would like FRail or Korobotchup to explain to us, just why Mikoliunas started the game, and why the MOM against Celtic (Tall) was dropped.
It was all about McGhee , I just wish somehow he couldv'e taken the "Three Amigo's" as well as the three points back to Lanarkshire.
We NEED a Manager Vlad.

Years ago managers would be queing for a job at Tynecastle but since the arrival of Romanov the position seems less attractive, c'est ca I' probleme.Would you?

Jim Baxter,

Alicante 09/12/2007 10:20:31

I dont get to Tynecastle now but my Sat afternoons I read the games on the computer. It makes sorry reading I can tell you. The season ticket holders I feel sorry for. We are 9 points behind Motherwell thats unbeleaveable. With all the International players we have we should be up there fighting for the top spot not trying to get into the top 6. The players are not at fault if we have coaches that are pure sh--- then thats what get served up. Romanov got rid of Burley when we were unbeaten so why keep this 3 in a job YES men no .doubt. In my last posting I got slated because I wanted rid of frail etc and was told hes a nice guy???? Well nice guy or not he doesnt put a winning team on the park.Infact playing 4-4-1-1 at home is crap especially against teams like Motherwell.

11

Taras Shevchenko,

09/12/2007 10:29:19

Why did this journo put his little "ASIDE" of:

"Hearts announced that the long-awaited planning application for a revamped Tynecastle will be lodged with Edinburgh City Council this week."

Is this to string the jambos along to believe we are on a path to greater things, so we just need to hang in there?

Vlad is focused on is dance-a-thon and the fun-boy-three are not flexible enough tactically and there probably isn't the level of team spirit that is required: are the players still dining at their own private tables at lunch?

Interesting that Levein seemed to motivate his players where Brewster didn't; but now that he looks like he's happily say tattie-bye to the Dundee Utd players, they have kind of given up on themselves too?! It just proves that players need an empowered single decision maker that they can look to for support, guidance and fair treatment for their efforts.

The few points I've made here all come down to one word...RESPECT.

Black Five,

All the comments say it and they can`t be wrong.Problem is nothing seems to change at Tynecastle .So you either go along with this utter shambles where the nearest any of these 3 clowns will get to being a coach is to sleep with one.So what`s the answer?A buy out of Romanov...doesn`t seem likely.Or you vote with your feet.I`ve said it before untill the fans let Miko and co play to an empty ground nothing will change. This idiot Romanov has got to be shown that the fans want a decent coach who can choose his own players and get rid of the Miko`s of this world on the first plane out of Edinburgh.Time for action my friends.

Edinburghs Big Team,

EH11 09/12/2007 10:35:24

Baxter you're right, Frail is not up to the job, nice guy or not, but to give him full blame is unfair as he is not fully responsible for team selection and tactics. Trust me it might not make good reading but it makes worse viewing!!! A young team with no direction, no will to win, no leaders on the park, no leaders off the park and tactics that are inappropriate for the games they're deployed in! This quest for europe is a joke as we will struggle to make top 6 - teams with inferior players will continue to take points of us as they are better organised and want to win more than we do - these 2 clowns in the stands do not understand that and dont seem to understand that the league table does not lie - we are as bad as it appears!

9 goals against 17 for at all other times.

There is no way this is coincidence.

16

Jim Baxter,

Ok say keep Frail but incharge of bringing on the youngsters as he doesnt have theclout for the big boys. Infact I dont beleave he will have any say at all in the matter. We need a Manager who putsthe passion in playing for the Hearts back into the players. At the moment they seem to have an attitude of not caring wether win lose or draw so long as the wages are in the bank at the end of the month. Build a new stand for what???? more foreign players to sit in.

#12 - Jim Baxter - "especially against teams like Motherwell" - Explain Please?

Do you mean football playing teams? Teams with a settled line-up? Teams with a decent manager? Teams above Hearts in the league?

18

Scoop in the City,

09/12/2007 10:54:41

Ibby Tall is obviously on his way in January - hence his intermittant appearances. Shame really, because he is our best defender and does not make the basic errors that other seem to excel at. Dreadful conditions that Motherwell coped with far better. Miko = why?
Special mention to the ref who took the opportunity to book Audrey for "simulation" - when he was fouled but then proceeded to give a free kick to McCormick for a Maloney style swan dive.

19

Des' Dad,

09/12/2007 10:57:35

Utterly disgraceful performance. Team selection wrong, tactics wrong, players commitment debateable. Romanov says he is happy with the club at the moment? Sorry, Vlad, if your'e happy with that then it's about time you left and allowed us fan's got some pride back in our team and, by the way, close the door on the way out.

20

Gorgie's Finest,

Edinburgh 09/12/2007 11:10:06

Sorry posted this on another thread didnt realise a new one had been started so ive copied it over.

I'm afraid this is a situation that is only going to continue, until Romanov gets his finger out and starts clearing out the underachievers, hangers on, wasters and those who basically couldnt give a monkeys and just interested in picking up a pay check each week. A change of management is needed before it is too late. It's getting to the point in the season where Europe already will be a dream. If measures are taken now maybe we can resurrect something and put a good run together and be back up there.

Credit to Motherwell they stuck in and at times played some decent stuff the heads didnt go down when we went 1-0 up it just shows what a decent manager can do to a team, We do have a good squad and coupled with a good strong manager could very easily be up at the top. As St Mirren proved yesterday and we have proved along with other teams so far this season the OF are not untouchable they're not the teams they once were and the gap between them and the rest of the league is closing fast, as each season goes on. Teams like Hearts and Hibs should be taking advantage of this now before the OF do decide to start ploughing the millions back into their teams.

Stevie Frail while a genuine nice guy is not Hearts manager material, nice guys dont always win, I was never happy about SF being given the chance in the first place and stated my reservations on other message boards. If we want to go forward we need a manger with experience and credentials SF simply is'nt at that level YET. Having said that we all know a good manager would be very reluctant to look at the Hearts job given whats went on before so basically were stuck between a rock and a hard place.

21

Riley Hamish,

Edina 09/12/2007 11:54:30

Sorry Guys, but I predicted t'other day that this was gonna be a tough fixture for all Jambos.
Mark McGhee's (9 points ahead)Motherwell aren't the finished article just yet, but they are MILES ahead of Hearts in terms of where the team is going, and while I MIGHT be tempted to think that Hearts COULD win the coming cup-tie (at home, in a one-off), there is just no room for doubt as to which club is currently going places.
Hearts "one good game, one bad" season won't cut it for the money that's been spent and the hype that's around the so-called Tynie quality players. How many remember how Jambo fans recently slagged off Stephen Hughes as "not good enough for Hearts"...the same Stephen Hughes who TOTALLY ran the Motherwell second half performance that played Hearts to a standstill (having been on the rack much of the first half). The unpalatable fact is Tynecastle doesn't have a player right now who looks even half as good as Hughes......and with InverBl00dyNess only ONE point behind now........the warning bells SHOULD be ringing....and loud.
Back to the drawing board I'm afraid...........when is the Champions League trophy coming again?????

22

busbyfh,

A few folk on here wondering why Miko was picked.

Cheering and ovation when he came on against Celtic. He also got a good backing yesterday from most of the fans. I do not boo players but why query Vlad playing him when he obviously thinks so many Jambos are behind him. (No i'm NOT one)
I posted yesterday that we as a group would get what we deserved by backing Miko and we did.He is one of the worst players EVER to pull on a maroon jersey and without doubt the most subbed.
While fellow Hearts fans must be admired for their loyalty to a Hearts player I hope they are happy that he is now back.Just look up the stats to find out how many games we win when he does not play and how many we lose when he does.
Maybe now they will shut the hell up when this clown appears.
Nothing against Lithuanians as there are as many poor Scots in the squad but six appeared on the pitch yesterday. I also "wrote" last week that many changes will happen in the team in December as Vlad wants to shop window some of the players he is going to punt in January. Looks like we will be suffering for this policy - but SIX of them ! Clear the dross out Vlad FFS.

At home to Motherwell we play one up front.

At Easter Road where FFFHibs try and swamp midfield therefore you should start with one up front to begin with - we play two up front. Which inept tube actually thinks up these tactically naive and embecylic formations.

24

Jim Baxter,

Alicante 09/12/2007 13:48:27

No 19, When we play teams such as Motherwell who were sitting 6 points above us I would have thought cutting the gap to 3 points was imperative and an attacking formation would have been used. Many years ago the Hearts V Motherwell games were the best for watching football in Scotland. Now I am sorry to see the position the Hearts are in. I also think things will get worse for them and better for the rest who are above Hearts at the present time and who all have good young Managers with good ideas of how the game should be played. No disrespect was meant towards the Motherwell Club.

We have said this all season i stated it yesterday again before the match that this system of a 4-4-1-1 does not always work, i think because we had such great success with it against the OF Frail and the rest want to employ it all the time where in fact it just simply isn't the system to always play. Teams like motherwell gretna etc will swamp the midfield stopping us getting the passes through or making runs to support the forward. Its basic footballing tactics and just goes to show the inexperience and lack of tactical experience the 3 stooges in charge possess. One up front at home is unacceptable its defensive and shows a lack of ambition.

It is a puzzle. It's no disgrace to lose to an exciting Motherwell side which happens to have a very in-form manager. The fact that Hearts might have performed much better has been covered by others.
The puzzle is that we are about to embark on a major stadium expenditure when there is no extra income from European participation this season and a team strategy which has now guaranteed no European income next season. The result must be that we will offload the high-earners like Kingston and Tall and build in a recipe for failure next season. What that does is to ensure that the debt continues to escalate notwithstanding the sale of the likes of Eggert Johnsson and then the season ticket numbers fall sharply as a fickle support becomes fed up at paying to watch a team with no confidence.
If the debt is escalating at £5 million per annum, how long can Vlad keep funding this nonsensical arrangement. It is a puzzle.!

27

Jambo-ree,

09/12/2007 14:47:21

Just when we thought we were getting some consistency in selection too! It was a bad, bad day to lose a game, given the other results on the day. Totally frustrating on both counts.

Wonder if this latest round of rotation was brought about by the lack of any reserve fixtures? If so then it's a bad policy. We knew Motherwell were a decent side so should have paid them the compliment of fielding our strongest team. Huge disappointment that Palazuelos and Tall were dropped after their displays against the 'tic.

Well, looks like we'll need to settle for bottom six status for another couple of weeks, at least. It's a long way back now.

28

Jim Baxter,

Alicante 09/12/2007 14:47:31

Romanov must change something to get us back amongst the best in the league, other than Gretna there is only a few points between us and the rest below us. He had good ideas when he took over the Hearts and we were all expecting to see great things over a period of time. But instead of going up we are going down the slippery slope. Time to stop the slide I think. My view is we should have a winning team on the field first, getting the fans on the side of the team then build a new stand. For me the good Hearts team is more important than a new stand. No good team no season ticket holders to fill the stand.

The only way a boycott of some sort could work is if a viable alternative to Romanov comes along. The fans need someone to back to have any hope of Romanov leaving. Right now we're stuck with him and can only hope he sees that if we finish where we are in the league now, his meddling will have meant that we've done no better than Craig Levien and Jim Jeffries managed with far less money and will change his tactics and get a manager in. I'd recommend a token boycott of Hearts merchandise but really that's a drop in the ocean. It's hard for people not to go to games when you've been doing it all your life. I'd be in favour of a small delegation of Hearts fans travelling to Lithuania to meet him on his patch and get some answers about what his plans really are for the club - any BBC producers reading - that would be a great wee documentary...

The fact is with Romanov's money, all he needs to do is relinquish his say in team selection and we'd have a very good chance of getting a Davis, McGhee, Eric Black or another of these great young managers Scotland produces. We got Burley who was the pick of that bunch at the time.

We average third in the SPL throughout it's time but really it's only because teams like Aberdeen and Hibs, who also have very rich men in charge of them, can't get their acts together that we've managed to maintain that. Romanov is obviously willing to put money into the team, unlike the Hibs and Aberdeen millionaire owners, but he has to step back and focus on the off-field stuff he does so well like marketing the club.

16. Lionheart - on more reflection, I think you've got something there; a lack of motivation seems to be the problem as your stats show, the tv exposure seems to get the players to dig deep!!

Maybe we just need to hire a hypnotherapist to buzz the players up? The current mgt sturcture sure ain't doing it.

Motherwell deserve a lot of credit. They have always managed to maintain at mid table (or higher) position over the past few years despite having little money to spend and pretty low crowds

#37 chill, mcghee is ok but lets face it well were rank before this season and McGhee's men only had one shot on goal - they got lucky because Hearts are a squad that is struggling to get motivated for a few resons probably.

most spl clubs are operating on a shoe-string compared to the OF so its a great endorsement of those clubs that they've made things work - I just think that the OF get too much respect - good on hibs for that and Hearts as well (Celtic away game aside).

Abject 2nd half performance from Hearts.

Abject reporting in 2nd para above:

'They did so by taking the fight to Hearts during a second half of unremitting commitment and tempo in blizzard conditions that should have been more suited to half of the home team and their employers.'

The reporter shows his ignorance of the fact that Lithuania play football in the summer!

37

39. Anton - cheers for the compliment bro. As far as Tall goes ..... who knows why he was on the bench?

I'll bet banderson will be receiving a healthy slagging at work - I'm sure that Colleen Paterson posts under CP-Hibee as well, but at least she doesn't jump in to defend her articles like a desperado. But it all adds to the een fun/madhouse that is the hearts'n'hibs threads. Your contributions always add a bit of flavour too.

Not long after leaving school a guy from my year at high school was writing about the football in the evening news (then the pink sports paper & there was no internet as it was the late eighties)....anyway, this guy while at school never played a game of football in his life outside of PE at school - I couldn't beleive it.

This guy was only into playing tennis and started writing for the evening news by reporting on tennis but then he was writing about hearts!!

It was outrageous, he had zero interest in football - whereas there were loads of guys at school who lived and breathed football in every way.

I wouldn't want their job though because once you've made a few articles that reflects how you see it, you then still have to come up with more and more stuff....so when they get criticism...it must be far too tempting to defend yerself with a cheesey username.

I wonder if banderson is behind mixu? The cloner could duplicate our usernames exactly - maybe its because it was an inside job?

Done that Hypno thing, and with Rima's golden stick, Pyjama man, and the Black box with all ten fingers maybe you could just give in to Vlad's fax machine

You talk about having someone to back, What i'd like to know is two things

Earlier this year it was well publiscised that a consortium was being put together by i think Pat Munro and led by some Icelandic billionaire and that they had seemingly offered romanov 50million for Hearts This was obviously them buying the debt as well. However romanov wouldnt even speak to these guys so it got no further than words/offers between 3rd parties. Pat Munro was also quoted at the time saying he was also in talks with Saudi businessmen as well. Then all of a sudden this supposed consortium disapears.

1a: Was this consortium genuine or was it a few guys looking to get public exposure and free advertising?

1b: If the consortium was genuine where were they before Romanov took over? Why not buy Hearts before Romanov did?

2: Where is this supposed consortium now?

#40 yup I'm about ready to abandon the Scotsman completely for the number of innacuracies in their reporting these days - actually mainly for their oblatant unionist, anti-SNP political agenda, red-top style misleading headlines not to mention the regular attacks on hearts lithuanians, mostly for being lithuanian. When it's sunny do they write that this'll suit the African players? It's barmy.

Also as www.climate-zone.com shows:

Kaunas gets just two more snowy days in December than Edinburgh on average for a grand total of 4 - hardly Arctic conditions.

I'll bet you David Hardie is a darts man?

Continuing to show up the ridiculousness of Richard Bath's barb against Hearts Lithuanians, far from being ideal conditions for them, the rain meant it really suited the Scots in both teams:

According to www.climate-zone.com, Edinburgh gets nearly 4 times as much rain as Kaunas in December. Those boys were actually at a disadvantage.

#52 Good try, but not that either. All I'm going to say is that you've had all the clues you're getting!

#50 okay, I'll have a go - on the hint of 'give him stick for it' - is it gondola racing, fencing, snooker/pool, javelin or chocolate speedway riding?
