GORDON Brown's own backbenchers are set to pile more pressure on him this week with a disastrous Commons defeat over MPs' expenses.
A Labour MP told Scotland on Sunday the Prime Minister would face "a very dangerous blow" to his authority when members rejected his plan to give MPs a £150 daily attendance allowance. Speculation has been growing at Westminster that Brown may have to abandon his reforms rather than face defeat on Thursday.

He is already struggling to move on from Labour's disastrous Budget and the embarrassment of the e-mail "smeargate" affair earlier this month. A Labour MP said: "I'm not going to support the Government and I know that there will be plenty others.

"It is just a complete mess. If it does go-ahead the Government will lose the vote and it will further undermine Gordon's authority.

"He is in a no-win situation. Either he will withdraw the proposal or go ahead and lose the vote, and in the unlikely event that he wins he will face the venom and poison from the media and the public."

David Cameron, the Conservative leader, and Nick Clegg, the Liberal leader, have opposed Brown's plan to abolish the additional costs allowance, worth £24,006 a year, which is used by MPs to subsidise a second home. This would be replaced by a daily allowance.

Brown felt that he had to act to pre-empt Freedom of Information legislation which will result in four years worth of expenses being published in July. Labour has already been embarrassed after it emerged that the Home Secretary, Jacqui Smith, claimed £150,000 while staying with her sister.

Although Thursday's vote is to be unwhipped, the result will be seen as an important indication of MPs support for Brown. Last week Sir Christopher Kelly, chairman of the committee on standards in public life, said the "tide of public fury" would continue unabated if MPs passed the reforms. Another Labour backbencher said Kelly's verdict on the proposals were the "kiss of death" for Brown's plans.

Brown's woes intensified yesterday when Tory MP Nadine Dorries confirmed that she was taking legal action related to the recent planned smear campaign. Dorries, along with Tory leader Cameron and shadow chancellor George Osborne, were to be the target of false allegations placed on a Labour website in a campaign orchestrated by spin doctor Damian McBride.

Dorries revealed that she had "instructed" lawyers. It is not known whether the target of the action is McBride, Guido Fawkes, the political blogger who uncovered the plot, or any newspapers involved.

The Downing Street petition which already has nearly 8,000 people signing it asking for Gordon Brown to resign is at...

http://petitions.number10.gov.uk/please-go/

Just out of curiosity if the thing really takes off, how many signatures will it need for him to actually have resign?

As Downing Street petitions go, this one certainly has a head of steam. Most seem to peter out at between fifty and a couple of hundred signatures.

I mean,if a couple of million people signed, then Gordy really would be under a great deal of pressure.

Don't be stupid!
Teflon Tony got 1.2 million email telling him to take his road charging taxes and stuff them. His response was that he would respond to each one telling them how they were wrong.
I think Maggie Brown's only pressure would be in his bowels, suppressing a laugh.

I feel, like you, that random homophobia is the best way we New Labour, English, unemployed web obsessives can divert from Labur sleaze expenses scandals!
Keep up the good work.
PS - loved your post the other day claiming that you earn over £130,000 and fall into new 50% tax rate!

Some people will do anything for attention...Thank you for the best laugh I've had this week,

Seems like the ermine trimmed straitjaicket is needed along with some horse tranquilliser,

From The Mail on Sunday,

"Angry Gordon Brown shouted a ‘take it or leave it’ ultimatum at David Cameron over MPs’ expenses during an extraordinarily bad-tempered meeting between the party leaders last week.

The Prime Minister repeatedly waved his fist and stormed: ‘We have to get this sorted! We have to get this sorted!’

And sources have told The Mail on Sunday Mr Brown appeared to blame Mr Cameron for the need to act now to restore the public’s faith in MPs’ expenses.

Mr Brown is this weekend struggling to save his proposal to ditch second-home claims and replace them with a flat-rate daily allowance.

But there are predictions of defeat in a Commons vote on the issue this week as Labour MPs rebel.

Rumours are rife that Mr Brown felt compelled to propose a quick-fix after being privately advised of ‘career-threatening’ revelations for some MPs in this summer’s publication of more than a million expenses receipts dating back over four years.

Tory and Labour MPs have been swapping stories of the ‘horrors’ to come. As well as the rumoured travel bill with receipts for helicopter journeys and foreign homes claims, there is said to be a Labour MP who ‘bought four flat-screen televisions in four-years’."

Very good link.

I never knew that about Tommy McAvoy.

Wonder why our 'quality' Scottish newspapers never find out anything worthwhile???

Its people like him who should be specifically targeted at the next election even down to tactical voting to get rid of him and his corrupt kind.

This clown epitomises all that is rotten and corrupt within New Labour Sleaze.

Out canvassing calling himself a 'socialist'. And getting returned by fools who think he is 'working class'

The best bit of all these Broon troubles is having Mandy pandy on TV telling us about honesty, reliability, loyaly, moral strength and moral compass and how Broon never knew that the man he hired as his special adviser for 10 years was a dirty stinking rat.

And Mandy thinks we are likely to believe him because he is such an honest three times lucky minister.

Broon is an immoral man, he lacks 'prudence' and puts hise interests and his party's before the interests of his country.

Mind you, in a year or hopefully less, there wont be many labour MP's in the Commons.
27

Jimmy Le Pie,

26/04/2009 10:20:51
And just when the comrades thought it couldn't get any worse!!!

From The People, (which is not even a newspaper!!!)

Embattled Home Secretary Jacqui Smith is to be forced into a job-swap with children's supremo Ed Balls.

Gordon Brown wants to get key ally Mr Balls, 42, into pole position to take over when he quits as party leader.

The PM fears he's done for if Labour go into next year's General Election against the 18-point Tory lead revealed by an exclusive poll in The People today.

And he wants Mr Balls to have a top office of state to boost his leadership credentials.

Mr Brown will reshuffle his Cabinet on June 12 after the Euro and local elections.

Ms Smith will be moved to education after the row over her expenses and her hubby using taxpayers' cash to watch porn.

But Alistair Darling will stay as Chancellor because the PM knows axing him now would be seen as a no-confidence vote in his handling of the economy.

The Former Mr. Angry,

Nice one. Still, Broon can always claim in his usual mendacious way that voting down his proposal was a vote for the current corrupt expenses system but HE was trying to make a difference in the short-term.

How you can swap one laissez-faire system for another and call it "fair" (remember the EC address where he claimed "fair but not laissez-faire?") is beyond me but it possibly helps to distract from the July revelations ("I did what I could to stop my Party from raiding expenses in a way which had nothing to do with me in the first place and from which I distance myself").

The peition thing - complete waste of time. You can see how he could smirk about borrowing the nation up to the hilt during the Budget address. Why would he worry himself about a petition which has absolutely no consequences? The main petition will be the voters' verdict in which he, Darling and company are to be decimated and not before time.

#2 Webwiser - why do you keep on having to change your name ? You NEVER post anything which is contrary to the terms of use in the Scotsman's conditions. All you do is post political truths that are uncomfortable for the unionists. The fact that you appear to keep on being banned is proof that the Scotsman edits posts for political purposes and not to remove sectarian, homophobic, racist, or offensive comments - which they allow to be made all the time. I think we all know that but the treatment of poster 2 demonstrates that perfectly.

Brown's expenses reform could actually see MP's who turn up for duty every day (you know, like we all have to do at work) making even more money than they do already. The fact they object to it is proof that a lot of them are not even prepared to show up for work to collect their earnings. Why do we put up with this ?

Poor Wee Gordon Broon. He is right of course. But at least he has a nice wife and two nice children. I admire his ability to take all the flack he takes.. But what I cant understand is!!!!! why does he want to give the sinking ship to the conservatives. It was them that first Torpedoed it. They have to go back to Essex Hall Hospital in Colchester. Serve, Truth and Justice, then they might stand a chance All the dirt under the carpet is to much. they need a ladder to climb on to the carpet now. Best to go back and have another word with Maggie Thatcher Her Cabinet and the 22 committee Then maybe we can move Forward. Silence is not always Golden.

Or How about selling the Admiralty table to the highest bidder, there are plenty of freaks in the world with lots of money. With its History it should fetch a few pennies. Only Truth survives . I have read that MP's will have the opportunity to go through their expense claims before publication and blank out anything embarrassing. That seems like offering a prisoner the chance to go through the prosecution evidence and so likewise.
The Scotnats must be revelling in the mess that Brown and co. are making of things. Nobody in England will want to continue the Union if they can get rid of Brown, Darling and the loathsome Speaker who has betrayed the trust of his constituents in Glasgow by forgetting why they sent him to Westminster in the first place and is one of the worst offenders in this whole disgusting affair. Brown Resign Petition: http://petitions.number10.gov.uk/please-go/#detail

TRIDENT: Traquir, not only has Trident not been an asset it has made us a prime target in the event of a nuclear war i.e. the opposition knows it's about to strike therefore takes out the enemies weapons first.

Glasgow would have gone down in folklore like Hiroshima and Nagasaki as it disappeared from the map along with Faslane.

Unionists: Trident has stopped us being attacked.

Me: Oh, I didn't realise Norway, Switzerland, Holland and hundreds of other non attacked countries also had Trident.

Trident does nothing but cost money and put us in the firing line. Get rid of it.

Wee Glen has just come on and we are discussing the highly political topic of Army Recruitment.

A great wheeze. 1, it keeps us away from important Scottish political questions whose answers would damage the London Labour Party and 2, it's a free advert for the unionist army to push its recruiting campaign amongst poor unemployed Scots.

My, there's nothing like having control of the media eh?

Hammered if he does nothing, hammered if he does something. However, I for one am not weeping for him.

Our politicians are doing nothing for us. I am shocked and appalled - and wonder if I was always this naive. Having spent a large chunk of the last 10 years in Eastern Europe and complaining about the way in which politicians are self-interested and don't give a monkey's about the people, I come back to old blighty and, lo and behold, find the same situation. Of course I blame all this on Thatcherism.

How quickly everyone jumped on the 'me first' monetarist bandwagon. And look where we are, almost bankrupt and absolutely blxxdy depressed.

Anyway, the only saving grace is that poor Gordon, who always wanted to be PM, is now PM as the world draws to an end. What a fitting end for the "New" Labourites who were too scared to stick to their guns and oust the tories and their greedy monetarist downgrading of the working classes of this country.
