VIOLENCE flared in Tehran yesterday after Iran declared President Mahmoud Ahmadinejad the winner in an election that was branded a "dangerous charade" by his main opponent.
Hundreds of supporters of arch-rival Mir-Hossein Mousavi clashed with riot police as, to the astonishment of the watching world, the hardline Ahmadinejad was re-elected with a landslide 62.6 per cent, upsetting widespread expectations the contest would at least go to a second round.

The pro-reform Mousavi only polled 33.75 per cent despite being tipped as having a real chance of ending the president's four-year grip on power. A statement from Mousavi condemned what he called the "manipulation" of results.

The Israeli government warned that world leaders must now act to stop Iran's nuclear ambitions. "If there was a shadow of hope for a change in Iran, the renewed choice of Ahmadinejad expresses more than anything the growing Iranian threat," Israeli spokesman Danny Ayalon said. "The international community must stop a nuclear Iran and Iranian terror immediately."

The official declaration of the result after the counting of almost 40 million votes triggered the most serious unrest in Tehran for a decade.

Demonstrators wearing the trademark green of Mousavi's campaign chanted slogans and set fire to barricades of tyres outside the interior ministry. Riot police attacked opposition supporters, beating them with clubs and smashing cars.

With claims that a commercial bank elsewhere in the city had been set on fire, police also moved to disperse any large gatherings of people.

Mousavi said the result, if allowed to stand, would lead to tyranny. "I personally strongly protest the many obvious violations and I'm warning I will not surrender to this dangerous charade," he said. Last night, Ahmadinejad countered that it was a "free and healthy election. People voted for my policies".

Hillary Clinton, the US Secretary of State, said America was monitoring the outcome of the election closely and hoped the result reflected the will of the Iranian people.

I thought Islamic states were all about peace and harmony.

From these reports it certainly seems not.

But then again, maybe the fact that the government is non secular, and is being reinstalled after a disputed election count, is the reason for the violence in the streets.

3 That might have been why they voted the nutjob back in. Extremism begets extremism and it's hard to remember where all this started. But it seems to be getting worse.

Did Ahmadenijad hire New Labour to run the elections? Sure sounds like he borrowed some of their talent for rigging elections and denying people their right to self-determination.

Most of the voters that were on the street marching were young demonstrators (anti Republican type voters) while the mainstream voters who voted for Ahmadinejad stayed at home and kept out of trouble.

I don't think the West like President Mahmoud Ahmadinejad very much! Could it be that we are stirring up unrest? Could it be that that Mahmoud did win a democratic landslide?

The brilliant shenanigans of our Labour Party have shown the value of democracy over here!

I don't think anyone in Iran really gives a $h1t what the USA thinks. It might just be that the people are just fed up being treated like $h1t, especially the women.

#8 Love Machine "Can you imagine the ramifications of that throughout the entire world. What a great way to reunite all the Arab population against those war criminals in Israel."

On an open battlefield the IDF would slaughter the Arabs. The IDF is the best battle trained army in the world and that is only because they have always had to fight one opponant or another. By keeping the Jews on their toes all the time over the years the Arabs created a first class battle trained army, only it wasn't on their side.

No, but he did see how effective postal ballots could be from the Glenrothes election.

Exactly, having a President that attempts to justify the holocaust and promises to wipe another country of the map while pursuing Nuclear Weapons seems a bit insane.

#32, LOL ... what an imbecile -- you talk about world peace whilst venting your racist spleen about "ragheads".

Presumably, you think that just because Iranians are Muslims that they also wear turbans or are Arabs, and yet they are neither.

In fact, they are Aryans, just like most Westerners.

But then, you don't really care for the truth, only that you have another excuse to demonstrate you racism (and without much hint of irony either).

Oh dear, what a choob

The Israeli government warned that world leaders must now act to stop Iran's nuclear ambitions.

Perhaps world leaders should act to stop Israel's slaughter of Palestinians.
The Iranian people have spoken and we must respect their decision. I wish we lived in a nuclear free world, I wish we did not need to worry about such horror weapons, but the West created these dispicable warheads so it seems hypocritical that we should all be pointing fingers at Iran.
How many Atomic bombs has Iran dropped on their enemies by comparison to the 2 that the USA have dropped? And how many Palestinians are slaughtered by Iranian soldiers?
Nobody can deny that Mahmoud is a rogue sort of leader, but to say he is any worse than the criminals in Israeli government or the criminals who started the war in Iraq is short sighted.

How many countries has the USA invaded?

How many times has America interfered with the electoral process of other countries?

Before the Lebabon elections the Vice Persedent of the USA travelled to the Lebanon to inform them that US aid would be "reconsidered" in the event of a win by a party other than the one the Americans endorse!

In 1953 the CIA engineered a coup in Iran deposing the first democratically elected Iranian Prime Minister a Dr Mohamed Mossadeq. The Shah was an American puppet who caused thousands of Iranians to dissapear and suffer torture by the SAVAK, his secret Police tutored by the CIA and MOSSAD.

The Iranians, like most folk turned to their religion for deliverance and the Mad Mullahs took advantage!

IRAN IS ANOTHER MADE IN AMERICA PROBLEM!!!

The people of Iran have chosen their leader. If their election was rigged, I am sure they will do something about it. All the Iranians I have ever met were good, decent people and those of their leaders that I have heard speak act like real leaders. We could do with some of them here.

Meanwhile, in the "free West", election rigging is accepted as a normal part of life, rather like watching Del Boy on the telly.

Aside from the comment I wrote being deleted, suffice to say, you're no marine or ex-marine because if you were, you'd be an American reading the same news stories that I am, that there is a very strong possibility Mr. Ahmadjammy is on the way out because the Ayatollah is caving in to the board of clerics that control him.
The head of that board is Rafsanji (sp) who backed Mousavi, a man who whenever he has the votes, can overthrow the Ayatollah.
Will it happen? I have no idea but it certainly is possible.
