IRAN yesterday accused the United States of double standards over its nuclear deal with India, as an informal deadline was passed for an offer by Western powers to freeze sanctions if Tehran halted its atomic ambitions.
Syrian president Bashar al-Assad arrived in Tehran, a few weeks after he said he would respond to French president Nicolas Sarkozy's request and use his good ties with Iran to help resolve its nuclear stand-off with the West. He was expected to meet
Iranian president Mahmoud Ahmadinejad and other senior officials during a two-day stay.

Western powers gave Iran two weeks from July 19 to respond to their offer to hold off from imposing more UN sanctions on the country if it would freeze any expansion of its nuclear work.

That suggested a deadline of yesterday but Iran dismissed the idea of having two weeks to reply. European diplomats in Brussels said they were ready to wait a few more days. The West accuses Iran of seeking to build nuclear warheads under cover of a civilian power programme. Iran, the world's fourth largest oil producer, denies the charge.

"We have not had any discussion (or) agreement of the so-called timeline of two weeks," Iran's representative to the Vienna-based International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA), Ali Asghar Soltanieh, said.

He criticised US policy after governors of the IAEA, the UN nuclear watchdog, on Friday approved an inspections plan for India, an important step towards completing a nuclear trade accord between New Delhi and Washington.

Unlike India, Iran is a signatory to the nuclear Non-Proliferation Treaty (NPT).

"Iran expresses its grave concern regarding the double standards used by the United States," Soltanieh said.

He accused the United States of a discriminatory move and of violating the "spirit and letter" of the NPT, and said Iran faced restrictions and was being "deprived from access to nuclear technology for peaceful purposes."

Friday's decision removes a barrier to an accord that would allow exports of nuclear fuel and technology to India for civilian use.

The United States, China, Russia, Britain, France and Germany offered Iran economic and other incentives in June to coax it into halting uranium enrichment, which can have both civilian and military uses.

The freeze idea was aimed at getting preliminary talks started, though formal negotiations on the incentives package will not start before Iran stops enriching uranium.

Iran is right. The US is blatantly guilty of double standards, and really has no business anywhere outside of its borders.

"please remind me the last time a US president said that an adversary should be wiped off the map?"

Saying it and doing it are two totally different things.

The US slaughtered 3,000,000 Vietnamese and they're still on the map and twice the size they were before.

There seems to be an unusual amount of silliness being posted above. This one is easy. The question is; do you think that Iran should have a nuclear weapon? Seemingly many above would answer in the affirmative. Like I say - silliness! All that this will do is prompt the Israelis to (rightly) attack Iran and seek to destroy their nuclear capability, wherever they can identify it. You lot may bay and whine about that fact - but it is indeed most likely a fact that you will have to deal with. How will the Middle East, or the world for that matter, benefit from this? I mean, the US will still be there and will still have its nukes, along with Russia, China, Britain, France, Pakistan, India and who know who else? Just precisely what is the benefit to the world in having a nuclear-armed Iran .... explain that one, please?

#7 Conan, While I whwoleheartedly agree with your opinion(s), I also realize that Iran is in a precarious situation because of what all it's enemies possess as far as nuclear weapons and WMD'S are concerned. We have gone too far with today's weaponry, but that won't go away. We now have to accept the fact that most if not all countries are seeking these kind of weapons, whether or not it is used for the purpose of self-defence or for more sinister reasons.

Iran needs nukes to keep the Americans from invading on the strength of the lie that Iran possess them.
Remember Bush invading Iraq on the same lie!

Remember Haditha in Iraq? American soldiers raped a 14 year old Iraqi girl and in order to cover up the crime they murdered her and 24 members of her family. American Mercenaries such as Blackwater is able to murder any number of unarmed Iraqi civilians with out facing Justice, the Americans have afforder them immunity! On 3July1988 an American Naval Captain on a state of the art warship murdered some 290 unarmed Iranian civilians passengers on a civilian Iranian passenger Airbus by shooting it down! Americans turned Abu Ghraib into a torture centre that was able to torture Iraqis on an industrial scale.

Since Iraq the lesson is simple, every country needs the Nukes to keep Americans from invading and ruining their country!

Muslim extremists have no problem what so ever with starpping a bomb to themselves, or driving a truck full of explosives and killing innocent people with the belief that they will go to paradise. And there are posters here that say it is OK to give them atomic bombs. I hope for your sake they don't drive those bombs in your direction.

There is no double standards. NPT or no NPT. Iran has already defaulted.
The US has offered India the latest Technology Nuclear power for the production of electricity if another Chernobyl saga is to be avoided.
Iran has been offered the same plus more.
Iran's propaganda is not justified as everyone in the "know" is aware of their real intentions. They are currently regarded as hostiles by their actions and posture.

Gere, don't be silly. Do you really think that Iran's handful of nuclear weapons - assuming they do get some or have some - will 'keep the Americans from invading'? Please, get real. And all that rubbish about raped girls, murdered families, downed aircraft, etc., etc. - totally away from the point of the question I posed, and which you did not answer, which was:-

How will the Middle East, or the world for that matter, benefit from this? (Iran being a nuclear-armed state).

"They are currently regarded as hostiles by their actions and posture".

Hostile? Posture?

Get real! Generating electricity by the use of nuclear power in the climate change environment is something for which Iran should be congratulated.

Iran has not threatened anyone with attack whereas both the US and Israel are threatening Iran almost daily.

"everyone in the "know" is aware of their real intentions'.

....I take it you are claiming to be "In the know".

Maybe you could enlighten everyone as to their "Real intentions".

vietnam....

placing 3 million casualties at the feet of the us is a little disingenous...

you can place that many more casualties at the feet of those who had us pull out in 73-74...

the North killed 2+ million who cooperated with us when they invaded the south...

and the KmerRouge killed 2+ million in cambodia...

not sure what you are going on about....

I do find it curious that you complain about this from the safety of being on the other side of China from these muslim extremists...

#10 Gere:

You're views are flawed, as are your alleged facts. Are we to presume that you are far more informed on the security issues concerning the issue of nukes in the hands of the Iranians? The majority of the "experts" on middle eastern affairs seem to disagree with your conclusions.

In fact, it is their opinion that should Iran acquire nukes, the political structure within Iran would not only use them to fulfill their promise to wipe Israel from the map, but they would also distribute nukes to Islamic terrorist factions who have been training in their country.

Repeated proofs of Iranian shipments of weapons to the terrorist elements operating both in Iraq and Afghanistan. not to mention missle shipments from China to Iran, and Russian technical support in building the several nuclear facilities within Iran, by your standard of reasoning or the lack of it, are justified?

I know of no western nation which has made open hostile statements of their intent to wipe Israel from the face of the earth. Suppose you come out of your cave and join the more enlightened of us who recognize the real threat here. Perhaps ignorance to you is bliss, but, in the end, if we follow your reasoning (or lack of it) the western world may find itself in a real struggle just to survive. These people do not value human life as we do in the west. You can not win an argument with a lunatic, a drunk, or a religious fanatic.
