WHAT IFS and maybes. The Dundee United goalkeeper Lukasz Zaluska wondering what would have been if the ball hadn't bounced just in front of him to allow Hibs to level the score just 25 seconds into the second half. Steven Fletcher thinking that maybe he should have taken a shot himself instead of squaring for Dean Shiels in stoppage time.

That late effort had been Hibs' best opportunity to steal three points and record their first league win in ten attempts. It would have been a harsh blow for United, who were the better side and could have been out of sight by the time Hibs' John Rankin scored his debut goal for the Easter Road side.

A CIS Insurance Cup final place already secured, Dundee United turned their attention back to league duties and began the match in a manner that suggested that the horrible monotony of last week's performance in Paisley had been an aberration. Not quite out of the blocks with the same spark they showed at against Aberdeen midweek, they did pose the greater threat in those early stages. And that was without Mark de Vries. Manager Craig Levein opting to leave the guy who once scored four goals against Hibs in a single game on the bench.

Hungrier for the ball all over the park and with greater verve and endeavour in the midfield area, spraying the ball out wide to the likes of Craig Conway and Jim O'Brien, they left Hibs chasing shadows at times. Crisper and more accurate in their passing, they outshone a Hibs side who looked slack and disjointed.

A Lee Wilkie header on to Darren Dods in the Hibs penalty broke to O'Brien and his scorching drive may have gone over the bar but it was a warning sign. Five minutes later, Danny Grainger played the ball in for Noel Hunt and, so close to goal, he should have done better. But when it came to profligacy, Hibs topped that effort in the 11th minute. Debutante Colin Nish got the ball in the box but United had bodies back. Then it was Shiels before it broke to Fletcher. Normally so clinical, his first touch let him down and the ball was cleared upfield.

When it got there, O'Brien had another effort, this time blocked by Ian Murray, and as Hibs scrambled to clear Guillaume Beuzelin was caught giving Willo Flood a push on the back and referee Eddie Smith awarded a penalty. Hunt took it and although Yves Ma-Kalambay got a touch to it with his left hand, he couldn't prevent the ball finding the net.

Dundee United were the superior force for the rest of the half, with even Hibs manager Mixu Paatelainen admitting his side had been poor. "We gave the ball away too easily and in that first half Dundee United wanted to win the game more than us. The second half was a much better performance."

It was certainly a more competitive and level contest, undoubtedly helped by the fact Hibs were able to get back level so soon after the interview. Not even a minute had elapsed when Rankin drove at goal. It wasn't the cleanest of strikes but the ball seemed to bobble as it arrived at Zaluska and, unsighted by Shiels who darted across the face of goal, he couldn't stop it bouncing up over him.

"I should have done better," he confessed afterwards, "because it wasn't a very good shot. I couldn't see the ball but that's no excuse. I am disappointed when I lose a goal, especially like that."

Eventually De Vries did enter the fray to a crescendo of boos from the travelling support and there were chances at each end. First was Grainger for the home side, then Fletcher's screamer whistled past the post. De Vries combined with Conway and Hunt before the latter's header looped over the bar.

At the other end Nish couldn't react quickly enough when the ball was played in and it deflected off him and allowed the home keeper to make a save. A few minutes earlier Nish had played in Fletcher but his opportunist overhead kick was foiled by the post.

Then came that last opportunity. Four on four, Merouane Zemmama slid the ball to his left for Fletcher but baring down on goal he opted to square to Shiels and his mis-kick went wide.

MAN OF THE MATCH: Willo Flood. One of a few candidates in midfield but, along with Mark Kerr, he ensured that Dundee United enjoyed an element of superiority in that department.

ASIDE: The man who scored four goals in one game for Hearts against Hibs, Mark De Vries started the match on the bench for United, coming on to a less-than-warm reception from the travelling fans.

The year is 2063. The place, a living pod close to Easter Road Stadium. A young boy and his grandfather are preparing to leave for the match that day against Spartans, the reigning SPL Champions (Spartans were one of the clubs promoted to the Scottish League when Celtic and Rangers were forcibly disbanded because they were disgusting.

As they boarded the Tram the little boy asked his Grandfather for the umpteenth time that day, "Grandad, did Makalamby really play for Hibs when he was a young man?"

"Yes he did son, but, do you know, there were some supporters who didn't see what a great keeper he was. Who didn't realise that he would go on to be the best goalkeeper the world had ever seen."

"It all started back in 2008 with a match against a team called Rangers, who thankfully are long gone. He was magnificent and he went on from there to be the best ever and when he was eventually transferred it was for a record £27 million pound. This was three times the amount that Hearts had received for their goalkeeper".

"Grandad, whats a Hearts?"

"Not here anymore son" "Lithuania I think"

A more likely scenario is below.

"Grandad, what's the Scottish Cup?".

"Son, even my Grandad couldn't answer that!".

# 1 your post is great and a welcome depart from the usual drivel.

As for the game, the poor fans that went to the game must have wondered why they bother. Perhaps just a bad day for both teams but from the Hibs perspective we know there is much more to do.

In any case, there's always the next match.

As for the match, Hibs were very very lucky yesterday.

#1 Fantastic comment - find it hard to believe the Makalamby being the best goalie in the world thou - should really start buying HOMFC programmes as they will go up in value in years to come. How much do you get for Third Lanark ones these days???

Don't you just sum up the Hibs support perfectly.

Hearts having their worst league performance in years and still your best hope is that they go out of business.

Lovin it.

We're not having that good a season ourselves, although if we beat Gretna on Wednesday we'll be up the league in the top six leaving your lot still in the mire.

Its got to something when we are arguing the merits of being 4th bottom instead of 3rd bottom and vice versa.

What I dont get is why people find it necessary to react to what is essentially a well written and very funny little story (unlike some of the journalism in the scotsman!)
I feel sure that while #1 hopes Maka goes on to prove his critics wrong, his tongue was planted firmly in his cheek when he wrote the afore mentioned piece.
Surely you Jambo's cant take exception to what is at the very worst good humoured banter!
Nice one #1... I for one laughed at your excellent humour and irony... lets hope Maka has turned a corner. Some of his saves were excellent yesterday although I did feel he could have done better at the penalty. It wasn't the best struck pen I've seen and he did seem to go down for it in a rather lethargic fashion.

I would agree with that, though if I were a Hibby I would want a new keeper.

#10 - Don't take exception to it at all. Just find it very sad that the best that can come out as post #1 on a thread about a Hibs/Arabs game is a pop at Hearts. What IS this fascination you have with us?

Still that puts you in the record books for this season as the longest non-winning run - and that's a league with Gretna in it. Not a good season for either of us in truth.

#1 Yorkina - Great story!

#10 Stanton 1875 - Agree with your comment about the poor journalism.

If I was this reporter and not a lazy one, I would have checked the many innacuracies she has put in it by watching a recording of the match when I got back to base. She had loads of time to do that. e.g.

1) Beuzelin did not push Flood, but by accident may have lightly clicked his heel as Flood ran across him. Beuzelin's hand were held high to avoid touching him as he tried to stop his momentum.

2) No mention at all of the incident where the Utd keeper clearly followed through with him shoulder to bring Shiels down.

etc, etc. Utd had more possession and Makalambay had some good saves, but Hibs actually had more clear cut chances that they fluffed.

Well done Yorkina - your post was actually not just a tongue in cheek ribbing of Hearts, but also at the Old Infirm.

MARKS FOR PERFORMANCE

Agree Flood was man of the match.

Makalambay 7
McCann 3
Hogg 5
Murray 8
Hanlon 6
Morais 4
Beuzelin 3
Rankin 6
Shiels 6
Nish 5
Fletcher 5

So Hibs star man was Ian Murray closely follwed by Makalambay. Murray was all over the defence keeping Utd at bay. Beuzelin is a shadow of the player he was under Mowbray and, on this form, may not be offered another contract by Mixu. Seems he is already trying to replace him if this Swedish guy proves to be the goods. Fletcher loses possession most of the time and Nish did not seem to know what his role was.

Have to agree that Murray was our best player and Maka only had one "moment" but lokked good otherwise.

Hibs were woeful 1st half and it was painful to watch, not much of a debut for Nish and Shiels first touch is often his last.

Although we should have nicked it at the end that would have been larceny and draw was right on chances created.

Very poor match report : the ball did not "bobble" in front of Utd's keeper - it bounced, as balls tend to do when they hit the ground, the pen was no push and to describe Fletcher's OHK from outside the box as merely "oppurtunistic" doesn't come close to doing it justice.

At least De Vries never scored...................................................

And our new young star goalie amde his first mistake, aside telling the truth about Aberdeen fans.....

#14 - and not a mention of the second penalty that Utd should have had near the end of the game?
Or the roasting that not yet fit O'Brien handed out to "Hanlon"?
A team that plays so pretty (sometimes) but threatens so infrequently probably should be ninth...
BTW what is Nish for - apart from being offside or jumping into Lee Wilkie??

OK, has to be said that #1 was a wee bit long winded but it was way better a wind up that the normal mindless crud we have to suffer on here.

Also a tad more interesting than some of the actual footie we've had to put up with season and all!!!

Make the fee £4.25 million and they can have Benji too!

For £4.3 million they can also add Brian Kerr!

This kind of paper talk is cheap - let's see what the next story is that is designed to upset our young players. This kind of story would normally appear in the Sunday Mail or the Record a few days before Hibs play Rangers. Apparently we have to wait till they are out of the UEFA Cup and then they Cup replay will take place. Watch for this story resurfacing then.

Not sure if you were watching the same game, but I guess the supporter of any team sees what he wants to see. I thought young Hanlon had an excellent game and O'Brien was nondescript. Much more dangerous is Conway who always plays well whenever I see him. He is a real handful and forced the Hibs management into subbing young McCann at half time.

I watched the game on TV and they played endlessly the 'penalty' incidents. Verdict:

1) United's penalty was soft but giveable.

2) The Utd keeper brought down Shiels. Penalty but not given.

3) Hunt threw himself down near the end (was he tired by all his misses). No penalty.

One swallow (or 2 ) does not make a summer and we still need a goalie.
Murray was our best player. We need a ball winner in midfield and he fits the bill)
Shiels was poor and overplayed everything that came his way. It was no surprise to me when he missed a sitter at the end. Go back to basics Deano and cut out the step overs.

Should football fans be prevented from going to away games?
No it’s only a small minority who are violent and you’ll never stop it.
Yes, the hooliganism must be stamped out.
Maybe but really the police need more resources to tackle the thugs
