THREE-quarters of the British public appear unconcerned about the swine flu pandemic and two-thirds have failed to take action to prevent the spread of the virus, a major survey has revealed.
Despite a public information campaign to raise awareness of the steps that people can take to minimise the risk, the vast majority of people have not altered their behaviour. A UK study of 1,000 adults found that only 24 per cent of those surveyed reported any anxiety about the illness, which is expected to soar by 100,000 new cases by the end of next month. It emerged yesterday that Harry Potter actor Rupert Grint is recovering from a "mild bout" of swine flu.

Only 2 per cent reported being in a state of "high anxiety", while the vast majority of the sample had failed to take heed of UK and Scottish government precautions to limit the damage caused by the bug, which has been linked to four deaths in Britain.

The administrations recommend that people wash their hands more frequently, disinfect things they touch and become part of a group of local "flu friends" who can help each other in the event of the illness taking hold. Seventy-two per cent said they had not increased their hand-washing, 83 per cent had not increased use of disinfectant and 85 per cent said they had not discussed the outbreak with a friend.

In Scotland, the number of cases is expected to rise to 10,000 by next month, a rise which suggests that Nicola Sturgeon, the deputy first minister and health secretary, is set for a busy summer trying to persuade Westminster that vaccine cash should come from UK coffers.

Most Scottish men seem to take it as a matter of honour not to wash their hands after having a pee. They won't bother washing their hands after sneezing in case anyone thinks they're a poof. That's especially true of those chippy, agressive and insecure wee men, of which our country has a lot. How many Scottish men carry a packet of paper hankies? Or a wee bottle of antibacterial hand gel?

Nicola Sturgeon could do worse than issue free tartan paper hankies and whisky scented gel, and get the NHS to spread a rumour that it will make their willies grow bigger.

Yes You see it everyday no-matter where you go, maybe they never learnt to read, and are death at the same time, I would say that they were worse than, 'PURE-IGNORANT'!
We all got our Governments Health Warning, the Important Information about the 'Swine-Flu', we all have access to the News, on the Television and Radio, Yet we have in our society those who do not Know What a Tissue Hankie is or for what it is used for.
Those are the ones who are going to spread the 'Swine-Flu' at an Alarming rate, as they Sneeze all over the air we breath, and leave behind millions of,...
....'germ-filled-droplets'!

You can't get swine flu off pigs. You can get it off insanitary Scotsmen who don't wash.

Fifi la Bonbon,

I know that, but I think the Scotsman News has enhanced the pig-picture now, because it is bigger and clearer, and the eyes are starting to stare at me,

Dunno about soggy hankies, I was taught not to pee on my hands as a wee boy. Is that not taught to the young men these days?
Have to say though a lot of pubs stopped the free peanuts on the bar just for this very reason... Now that is sad...

Maybe its because most of us are,as a whole are using common sense and not freaking out by closing down schools or offices. Its just about using common hygiene sense.

The virus is not spread by washing your hands after peeing and, contrary to most other influenza viruses, is not spread easily by sneezing. That's not to say it will not mutate later to spread more easily through sneezing but at the moment close contact with an infected individual is needed to spread it. That said, wash your hands after peeing you clatty eejits.

I do not know why you must wash you hands after having a pee. My old Ned does not have flu. I would be worried if it started to sneeze or had a runny nose.

Wife came from abroad with flu a number of months ago I did everything in my power to prevent myself getting this monster. I still got it; despite, spraying the air with anti viral, cleaning handles, spraying up my nose, wearing rubber gloves and a mask---old Ned did not catch it..
Just vanish up to the But an Ben in the Heelins, with the outside cludgie and the angry midgies.

Is urine not sterile?

Perhaps it helps to destroy viruses.

As with most of these types of diseases, the biggest risk exists within the NHS (I sometimes think it's a some form of ensuring a 'job for life') whereby the infection is passed on due to staff ignoring basic hygiene procedures *within* NHS establishments...

We in scotland have not been given any information leaflets with advice like english counterparts so I am not surprised there seems less people taking any notice of swine flue

Since the hype, sorry - story, about swine flu being a pandemic and please don't spread it around since you scum spend half your time spreading your snot on lift buttons and old ladies isn't working (not many dead and they had "severe underlying health problems") is it any wonder that people have responded to this with full-blown apathy?

As someone pointed out you have more chance of emerging dead unnecessarily from an NHS hospital (woooo!) than of dying from this stuff. Advice on cleaning up should apply to medical and nursing staff far more rigourously than to the peasants, who have enough scary stories to deal with.

#17 - we in Scotland (well Perth anyway) were given information leaflets a while ago through the post. As a wholly unnecessary and wasteful exercise this was hard to beat seeing as most of the advice was already being pumped out on the telly or improving newspaper copy.

Loads of comments from manky Scots men defending not washing. Not surprising at all.

anyone not washing their hands after going to loo, must not have been taught by their parents,if i dont hear the tap being run in the loo my kids get told get back in and wash your hands, worked for me and now they do it without dad telling them off
i wouldnt eat any thing from a bar thats free to joe public,as like everyone has said ,some brainiac macho man has just been in and done a thrupenny bit and didnt wash their hands
how many pubs toilets have you seen ,no soap or towels?,they should be warned and then do it again shut down
by preventing the spread of germs, certain bacteria can be wiped out
fail in basic hygene and their back in their millions

The non-handwashing is not a Scottish only problem. Having lived in Australia and England I can report it is prevalent their too. In fact none of my Aussie mates washed there hands after urinating (including a dentist and an anaesthetist). The latter two gave the same justification "I don't pee on my hands".

I discussed this with an English female friend while her girlfriend was at the toilet, she said "it's not just guys watch this" and sure enough her mate was back in a flash.

As for the "urine is sterile" that is true of "mid-stream samples" only (from a bacterial viewpoint) and even then that is only the case if their isn't an urinary tract infection. There are also some non-UTI viruses that can be found in urine and potentially transmitted through urine.

Trust me I'm a biologist. I'm also a Scottish male who washes his hands after visiting the toilet, before handling food, and and after blowing my nose or petting an animal.

For those that are not in a healthcare environment I view anti-bacterial gels to be overkill though.
