Bochd: poor

Pronounced "bock", it means poor as in financially challenged, feeling down or feeling seriously unwell. "Tha e bochd anns an ospadal" (Hah e bock anns in osp-ad-dal), "He's seriously unwell in hospital." If a medical condition is described as bochd, then it is regarded as serious. Bochd is used in other contexts too. "Gnothaich bochd" (gnoo-heekh bock), "a sad state of affairs". When asked for an opinion about a situation, as in "Dè ur beachd?" (Jay oor byack), "What do you think?". "Tha beachd bochd" (hah byack bock), literally "a poor opinion", is a stinging reply. Common slang for social security or state benefits is "Bòrd nam Bochd" (bawrd nim bock), literally "the board of the poor".
