WELCOME to Scotland on Sunday's online feature, Question of the Week.
Each week we ask the readers of scotlandonsunday.com for their views on a burning issue from the past seven days.
The best responses may be reproduced on the Online Forum page in Sunday's print edition of the newspaper on November 23rd.

If you wish to appear in Scotland on Sunday, then, along with your response, please leave a first name and surname, as well as your location - eg Tom Smith, Edinburgh. We welcome all comments.

The question this week is...

Are companies right to dismiss or discipline staff they discover belong to the BNP?

The simple answer is NO they are not. This is supposed to be a democracy we live although under Labour one would be forgiven for thinking this is not the case.

Ones religion and political beliefs are a private matter.

People who claim to be Muslims, for example, are murdering people every day in life. Should companies get rid of all Muslims ?

Do not agree with the BNP but I do respect their right to think, vote and believe what they like.

1. An admirable position, and one I share except.....

Go look on the BNP website, go see the ''report'' they have just sent to 200,000 first time voters called ''race cuts both ways''. It is poison, pure race hatred, nothing more nothing less.

A person with these views cannot, in my view, be employed by the state. First of all they would be unable to discharge their duties in an appropriate and fair manner, and secondly they would breach laws which have been passed on equalities issues on a daily basis.

The state should not employ someone who cannot observe it's laws or carry out their functions in a reasonable way.

What private companies do is up to them.

Are you colour blind when it comes to racist attacks?

White people are often the victims of racist attacks so your comment is at a stroke RACIST and you should have a good look at the BNP website and learn the truth about the BNP, you get good and bad in any party the world over, look at the snp it has MUSLIM TERRORIST links and as other posters have said the snp is far to close to muslims and all its doing is damage your party.

I am not a BNP member but visit their excellent site often like millions of others, i am now tempted to join as i would like to see a very strong BNP presence in Glasgow and all over Scotland, without question there is the demand again in Glasgow and i would be happy to assist in spreading the good word of the BNP.

Please explain why is it alright to have a black or muslim group e.g police etc etc, yet a White group gets branded as racist, i am all for White groups.

THIS IS OUR COUNTRY.

The BNP are a legitimate political party with councillors representing thousands, it is tipped that they will win several seats in the european elections.
This country would put Mugabe to shame, it seems if you hold certain political views then you cannot work in various fields. the BNP have never committed acts of terror or broken the law, unlike the labour party who have invaded iraq illegally, killed thousands of muslims, they have introduced thousands of new laws to control us, and are on a path to economic meltdown.
what it comes down to is the labour party are terrified of BNP growth, the white working class are deserting them in droves, by publishing membership lists they are trying to derail the BNP's european election drive, imagine , the BNP with access to the funds of having MEP'S
To those who say the views of the BNP are 'vile', they should take a look at their parties. the BNP want controlled immigration, to be free of Europe, and to see Britain crime free and decency restored, Labour, the tories and the SNP want to flood Scotland with cheap labour to keep their profits up, they are the people in power now, they are the ones who have presided over Scotlands funeral pyre.Any one who supports labour , tories or snp should cringe in shame.
How dare a government decide that if you hold certain views then you cant be a cop or fireman, this is like Zimbabwe, i truly hope the BNP do well in the European elections, just to see the fear in the establishment parties eyes.

Despite the BNP's thin veneer of respectability, underneath the BNP are the same old racists and bigots - just read Searchlight the trade union journal which reports regularly on their methods and practices and exposes the lie that they have changed There is no place in a democratic country for those who preach division and hatred, whether it be radical muslim clerks or the BNP. We must learn the lessons of the past which gave a voice to such parties and look where it lead us. - the slaughter of millions in the second world war.

A bunch of well known misfits and oddballs, a group of far left loonies who spread pure poision, cowards who attack old people and children.

Take a look at one of Britains most visited websites and fastest growing political parties the respected BNP.

P.S You can also see a photo of one of the searchlight loonies who broke into the BNP office in London were one of the BNP politicians represent the people of London, this is the real searchlight, robbers and thieves to add to the list.lol.

I came across the BNP many times in East London when I was involved in local politics (Independents) their behaviour and politics was, if anything, better than the 'hard left' a bigger bunch of scum I have never seen. My running mate was of the opinion that people with minority views should not be pressured into going underground but should be encouraged to remain in the open where at least they can be engaged in dialogue to attempt to argue out their point of view. I very much agree with this viewpoint.

Whilst I would disagree with the BNP on the matter of policies, at the end of the day they are a recognised and voted for party in this sham of a democracy we live in.
Those who say ban this party and sack those who vote for them are worse than the people who belong to this party. If those in searchlight etc actually understood the term Fascist or Nazi they would see that is exactly how they are behaving.

According to news reports , thousands of BNP members are receiving threats, it seems that many are emanting from leeds and manchester university and from a trade union call centre used for canvassing, it just goes to show who the real bullies are.
The reaction against the BNP is despicable, labour are acting like mugabes thugs, apparently you can only have a job of if you support the cosy Lab/con/lib/snp closed club, if you dare oppose them then you will have your windows smashed, threatened with death and have your job taken away from you.The police have said that there are al queda supporters in its ranks, but no action has been taken against them,a chief fire officer was recently caught with child porn on his pc at work and was allowed to kep his job, but a teacher who viewed the BNP website at work is threatened with the sack, it goes to show the scum who run this country. If you love your country and think our culture is worth preserving, then your family will not be safe, if on the other hand you are a labour/seachlight thug then its ok to threaten BNP members and the media are silent over their attacks. Imagine with labour or snp members were being attacked, think of the outcry.
As for you salmondella, the thugs at searchlight are an extreme communist group who deserve nothing but contempt.

With all due respect some of you are missing the point.

If you hold the views which are propogated by the BNP -and you only need to read their literature to recognise them for the racists they are, you cannot be allowed to work for the state.

The state as our legislature have passed laws. If you do not agree with these laws, which enshrine equality, then you cannot realistically work for the organisation which has passed these laws, as representatives of the people. That would be like me signing up for the Army on the understanding that I wouldn't fight anyone. It's a non starter.

What private companies do is up to them.

Incidentally, when it comes to thuggish activity of a political nature ''Redwatch'' takes some beating.

If you can't debate with the British National Party, regardless of your political, or non political views, then your just as bad, as you say they are.

What is more astonishing is that people such as Searchlight, SWP, UAF and even elected politicians have spewed nonsense for years about BNP members and supporters as racists, fascists and thugs, even skinheads. Yet, the fail to acknowledge the BNP have a lot of people from all backgrounds.

People will now notice the change in attitude towards the BNP, as parties try to capture votes from these supporters and members. It's too late though, you have insulted them long enough.

A lot of these anti-fascist groups fall under the category they oppose, yet they fail to see this, that's how you know when someone who defends them are supporters or members.

I've seen them inaction, and I don't like what I see. Nor do I like groups such as National Alliance, and other extreme groups being associated with the BNP members and supporters just to sell a story.

Labour, Conservatives and Liberal Democrats worry about the BNP, because it is taken their support base, and eventually (possibly) wealth and power from these parties as more and more people vote, and support BNP. It basically means, If I were an MP for Conservatives, and the BNP were going to contest against for my seat, and I know that my party is all for EU = more immigration etc then I'm going to be worried because i'll lose pay, expenses and a nice home etc and so will my party lose power in Parliament.
