Separating the cultural wheat from the chaff...
FILM
You wait 13 years for another glimpse of movie gold dust, and when it comes along again it draws comparisons to a rather bloated Cagney And Lacey. Yes, DeNiro and Pacino are back together, folks, but they're not looking as sharp as they used to. Righteous Kill, which is in cinemas from tonight, teams the pair as retiring detectives set on the case of a killer who is sniffing out well known criminals and clearing them off the streets for good.

Got the twist yet? The two most likely candidates are the Tweedledum and Tweedledee, of course. If you're a fan of either actor, then you should take a look at this, but try not to cringe behind your popcorn too much as the two teeter on the line between sensation and spoof.

The best option still is Tropic Thunder, with Ben Stiller, Robert Downey Jnr and Jack Black as actors filming a war epic who get caught up in the real deal.

MUSIC
Ahead of the release of their new album, Ode To J Smith, this Monday, Fran Healy and the boys have been touring Scotland and end their jaunt with a hometown gig tonight at Glasgow's ABC. We've had a listen to the new material, and there is definitely something a lot less insipid about both Healy's delivery and the rocking guitars. Still nice, just not as dim.

Ex-Suede front man Brett Anderson hasn't had the best of responses to his solo work, but he remains a magnetic performer and a master of one of the best hip swivels in pop. Worth the ticket price alone at Oran Mor, Glasgow, tomorrow night.

Forget all those karaoke types trying out for boot camp on your screens tomorrow night, and go see the real deal instead as last year's X Factor winner, Leon Jackson, appears at Edinburgh's Queen's Hall this Sunday (3pm). Jackson has been hidden away preparing his debut album, which will be released next month (just in time for Christmas, aw, he's all heart). We took a look at him on his website, and the West Lothian warbler is looking very buffed and quaffed these days. No sign of the peely wally pop star who stole the show last December.

DAYS OUT
Doors Open Day Edinburgh takes place tomorrow, as the city flings open the doors to some of its more private buildings, including St Bernard's Well in Stockbridge, which is rarely without a padlock. Access ranges from a peek into print works, stately homes and historical homes of interest, and all will be on display for gratis to your average man on the street. www.cockburnassociation.org.uk/doorsopenday/

Autumn Speyside Whisky Festival is on at Dufftown until Monday. Soak up the atmosphere and alcohol of Whisky Country, as the local distilleries and Dufftown itself stages tastings, tours, masterclasses and dinners to celebrate John Barleycorn. www.spiritofspeyside.com

Fashionistas can get their fill in Scotland's largest cities this weekend, whether it be at Ingram Street Shopping Day, tomorrow, where local shops and designers will take to the streets as part of Merchant City Festival, 2-4pm, or at Fashion vs Vintage Day in Edinburgh on Sunday at Mulltrees Walk, where the best in couture goes head to head with local designers of a more retro style to celebrate the range of shops available in the capital.
