Butler receives cheeky pick-me-up
Scots actor Gerard Butler is feeling a little sore, according to the Daily Mirror, after Madonna injected him with a vitamin shot in the buttocks. Butler is starring in RocknRolla, the new action movie from Madge's husband Guy Ritchie. When he was feeling a bit low one day on set, Madonna said she had the perfect pick-me-up. Butler told the Mirror: "I wasn't feeling great so she said it would perk me up. The next thing I've got my trousers down."

Joy at last for mother after 18 miscarriages
Sometimes you come across a story that leaves you with a new appreciation of human resilience. And so it is with the Daily Record's tale of Angela Haston, who is pictured cuddling her days-old daughter Mia-Rose, who was born after Angela had 18 miscarriages in eight years. "She is perfect and is my little angel," said the 30-year-old mum.

Rangers player under guard after internet threat
Rangers star Nacho Novo is under guard at his home after a bigot posted his address on the web, according to the Daily Record. The web posting came after suggestions in internet chatrooms that Rangers players should be regarded as targets for attack, after an assault on Celtic coach Neil Lennon. Nacho told the Record: "This is my home, my family stay here and no one will mess with my family."

Oil prices drop as Gustav loses strength
After hitting record highs earlier in the year, oil prices dipped below $109 as fears subsided that Hurricane Gustav would cause a severe disruption to supply and in light of concern that slowing world economic growth will hit demand.

New York light sweet crude fell more than a dollar to $108.64 a barrel, while Brent crude dropped $1.04 at $107.30.

Prices have fallen from their record of more than $147 a barrel over the summer in light of growing evidence that some of the world's main markets, including the UK, may be heading for recession.

She's a girl your mother would love, that Natalie Portman. Well mannered (she's obviously wearing the dress the stylist gave her out of politeness). Practical (she seems to have whipped the dressing table skirt off so she can cover herself up). And stylish (she's even added her own touch with the curtain tie backs on her shoulders). What a gal!

You can say many things about Sophie Anderton's outfit as she swans gaily about this high-society soiree. But the thing that stands out most of all is her brass neck.

Appearing on the red carpet at the Venice Film Festival must be every young actress's dream. In fact it's so big a dream that it can involve the entire family. Such is the case with Alessandra Negrini. The familial involvement was so great that her Nana crocheted this dress for her.

Hearts ace Stewart picked for Scotland squad
Hearts midfielder Michael Stewart has been called into the Scotland squad after manager George Burley was hit with another spate of withdrawals.

Cardiff defender Kevin McNaughton and midfielders Callum Davidson, of Preston, and Kevin Thomson, of Rangers, have all pulled out because of injury.

Stewart will now join up with the squad preparing for Saturday's World Cup qualifier against Macedonia away and the match in Iceland four days later.

Yesterday David Marshall (Norwich), David Weir (Rangers) and Garry O'Connor (Birmingham) all pulled out to be replaced by Jamie Langfield (Aberdeen) and Kirk Broadfoot (Rangers).

Murray faces Argentine in US Open quarter-final
Andy Murray goes for glory tonight when he bids to reach the semi-finals of the US Open.

And the British No.1 has been given a lift after big brother Jamie won through to the final of the mixed doubles in New York.

The senior Murray sibling partnered Liezel Huber to a 6-3, 6-4 victory over Jill Craybas and Eric Butorac in the semi-final at Flushing Meadows.

The 22-year-old Scot and his American partner will face Zimbabwe's Cara Black and Leander Paes of India in the final.

Andy Murray must overcome the in-form No.17 seed Juan Martin Del Potro of Argentina if he is to reach the last four of a Grand Slam tournament for the first time in his career.

The match is due to start around 7pm BST and will be shown live on Sky Sports Extra.
