“It’s fantastic that Gemma has got through too. I’ve not managed to see all her fights but she will have a tough fight in the final against a [world-ranked] top-16 opponent. We’ll go and have a chat about it now.”
Sarah Adlington, who received a bye to the semi-finals of the women’s -78kg, won her contest against Esther Ratugi when the Kenyan got four shidos - yellow cards.
An ippon throw won Chris Sherrington his semi against Tim Slyfield of New Zealand.
Matthew Purssey made the -90kg final, holding down Australia’s Mark Anthony at the end of their contest for a waza-ari win.
Andrew Burns booked a place in the bronze medal contest at -90kg after a win at repechage.
And Burton’s wife Gemma Gibbons who fights for England is also looking forward to a final. She’ll go in the women’s -78kg category a few minutes before her husband.
