If your mum hates afternoon tea, here's a selection of savoury takeaways for Mother's Day
Not all mothers want afternoon tea and chocolates.
If yours is a savoury queen, here’s a selection of alternatives to keep her happy this Mother’s Day.
PASTA
Spoil your darling madre with the Mother’s Day dinner from pasta company, Via Aemilia. It’s £50 for two, with collection from their Colstoun base, or delivery within Edinburgh and East Lothian. Expect four courses, starting with rosemary and garlic focaccia, then pork pate en croute and apple compote, followed by their squid ink tagliolini with cockles and mussels, plus la vina baked cheesecake.
CHEESE

Hide AdIf your mum is a fan of Vacherin cheese, which is coming to the end of its season, get her this gift set. It includes cheesemonger IJ Mellis’s suggested alternative - a wheel of buttery Rollright - as well as Ailey Mae chocolate (raw, so less sweet than the usual), Senzaniente wine and locally made cheese sables. “Give the gift of cheese,” they say, and we will oblige.

STEAK
There must be some bloodthirsty mums out there, as Hawksmoor quickly sold out of its Mother’s Day boxes. To compensate, they’ve increased the volume of their other takeaway options. We like the sound of their T-Bone Box, £135 for two, which includes old spot belly ribs, slaw, a huge T-bone steak to share, chips, creamed spinach and peppercorn sauce, sticky toffee pudding, the sour cherry negroni for two, and other treasures. Nationwide delivery.
SEAFOOD
Order by 6.30pm on Friday March 10 for Mother’s Day pick-up or delivery (they’re based in North Queensferry, but can drop off to surrounding areas, see website) of The Wee Restaurant moules es frites, £14.50. These are no ordinary beasts, they’re Shetland mussels with basil, pine nuts, bacon and Parmesan cream. Ondine are also doing a Mother’s Day Set Menu for Edinburgh delivery from Friday, March 13 to Sunday, March 14, three courses for £35pp, with dishes like whipped smoked salmon, bacon jam and buttered crumpets, as well as roast cod boulangere.
SPANISH PLATTER
If your mummy dearest is not into reheating and faffing about in the kitchen, Edinburgh’s Spanish wine bar, Piggs, are doing a cold meat and cheese platter with sourdough bread and manzanilla olives, as well as a bottle of Prima Vides Premium Cava, all for £44.95. Collection from their 276 Canongate location on March 14 from 12-6pm
BEEF
There’s a sticky toffee pudding included, but Harvey Nichols’ HN@Home Mother’s Day takeaway’s main event is the cote de boeuf, served with duck fat roast potatoes, purple sprouting broccoli, roasted vegetables and rosemary jus. We also like the sound of the starter - pressed confit duck with blood orange and rhubarb compote, black pepper crème fraîche and gingerbread. Choose the four course option, and they’ll also chuck in cheese and crackers. And, if you order a bottle of Tanqueray Royale (£35), you’ll get a gratis Tanqueray Explorer set (worth £20). Nationwide delivery.
PORK (OR MORE BEEF)
There’s more to Craigie’s Farm than punnets of strawberries. Their Mother’s Day roast can ordered online, to be delivered within Edinburgh or collected from their Queensferry location. The three courses feature ham (or beef) with dauphinoise potatoes, cauliflower and broccoli cheese, and Yorkshire puddings, all for £30.
