Racing: Elliot saddles 188-1 treble

NORMAL service resumed at Perth yesterday, with Gordon Elliott saddling a 188-1 treble at the picturesque Scone Palace course using three different riders.

The County Meath trainer has dominated at the track since it provided him with the first- ever victory of his career back in 2006 and he regularly arrives in Scotland mob-handed.

Bayan is developing into quite a useful dual-purpose performer and he started the day strolling home nine lengths clear under Richard Johnson as 4-5 favourite for the Fonab Castle Hotel Novices’ Hurdle.

Wot A Shot stayed on for second from the County Down yard of Colm McBratney, completing a good result for raiders from across the Irish Sea.

“It has been a happy hunting ground for us, and to be honest he wanted to be winning like that as it looked a very weak race, but he has kept the owners happy,” Elliott said.

“He ran in the Ulster Derby last time (sixth) but he didn’t get the best of runs that day. You could run him back over here somewhere under a double penalty, and then maybe find him a handicap on the Flat at Galway.”

Local favourite Wilson Renwick, returning from a few weeks on the sidelines, then completed an Elliott double as Feisty Lass (4-1) landed the Farmers Market September 9th Selling Handicap Hurdle despite a bout of tail-swishing.

Brian Hughes then helped infrequent winner Dante’s King blast home at 20-1 in the Weatherbys Hamilton Insurance Handicap Chase.

Another Irish success came through 11-4 favourite Lisbon in the ABF Soldiers Charity Handicap for Patrick Griffin and James Reveley.

Nicky Richards only has a skeleton crew of summer jumpers but he found the right race for Malin Bay (100-30 favourite), who lifted the Robert McConnell Scots Guards Handicap Hurdle in comfortable fashion.

The trainer said: “He ran well here last time but two-and-a -half miles is a bit sharp for him. Three miles was just the job.”
