Transport planning information will ensure the 50,000 people expected to attend one of Scottish golf’s most high-profile events can effectively plan their journey. Fans are being encouraged to take advantage of the free park and ride services on offer as there is no public parking available at the course itself. Specific routes have also been identified to ensure as little disruption as possible to both Gullane residents and those travelling to and from the event. These routes bring spectators to the public car park from the East, and therefore avoid any congestion in Gullane. Members of the public who are not attending the Scottish Open should also try, where possible, to find alternative routes and avoid the A198 through Gullane in particular. The key points from the transport plan are: l No public parking at Gullane Golf Club l Visitors not attending the tournament should avoid using the A198 as this could cause significant delays l There is a regular train service from Edinburgh to North Berwick and a free shuttle bus will operate from North Berwick Railway Station l There will be a complimentary shuttle bus from the public car park to the course l Those travelling by car should use the A1 and exit at the Oak Tree Junction at Haddington l Anyone using the A7 and A68 should follow signs to Haddington via the A6093 and then follow the appropriate AA signs As part of the European Tour’s sustainability programme, Green Drive, sustainability considerations are at the forefront of planning for the event. Encouraging spectators to use public transport, and the provision of a shuttle bus from the local train station, aims to reduce disturbance for the local community, ease congestion for spectators and reduce the impact of the event on the environment. Peter Adams, tournament director of the Aberdeen Asset Management Scottish Open, said: “Every effort has been made to minimise travel disruption, both for spectators and local residents. The event is amongst the most prestigious in world golf and increasingly popular, attracting some of the biggest names in the sport to Scotland. “We expect over 50,000 fans to attend so spectators are well advised to follow our guidance.” Councillor John McMillan, East Lothian Council’s spokesperson for Economic Development and Tourism, said: “We’re delighted to be hosting the Aberdeen Asset Management Scottish Open at Gullane. “The village and surrounding area are very much open for business and I’m sure if everyone follows the traffic advice, spectators will be able to get to the course easily and local businesses can benefit from the influx of visitors.”
