RYAN Mason fired Tottenham to their first Barclays Premier League victory of the season as Sunderland were made to wait for theirs.

The midfielder stabbed home an 82nd-minute winner from substitute Erik Lamela’s through-ball to snatch a 1-0 win the Londoners scarcely deserved after being second-best for much of what had gone before.

Jermain Defoe and Jack Rodwell both hit the woodwork for the Black Cats on a day when they were much improved, but were unable to make the pressure tell in front of a crowd of 40,303 at the Stadium of Light.
