Emergency vehicles clocked up 325 road accidents in Lothian. This caused some alarm.
I'm struggling to believe those figures . . . that's almost one each day . . .

Hide AdAround 10 per cent of accidents involving police vehicles were vehicles on emergency calls whilst the remaining 90 per cent happened whilst on routine duties. It would appear officers should spend more time improving their own driving skills rather than skulking in hidey holes trying to catch motorists doing a couple miles over the speed limits.

I remember often seeing fire engines heading down Leith Walk with lights and sirens on going towards MacDonald Road around about 5pm. Cannot think why this would be? You also see police cars switch their lights on to get through traffic lights then turn them off and drive on as normal so obviously not really in a rush.

Of course, if anyone was waiting for an ambulance or police car or fire appliance in an emergency you would forgive them if they had a bump, but got there in time to help the person requiring emergency assistance.

With over 2,000 police drivers, with easily a million miles of journeys made through every road in the Lothians and the Borders to have only 325 incidents of vehicle damage of any sort is an amazingly low figure.

Another day, another Scottish souvenir shop opens on the Royal Mile amid a growing battle between budget tartan retailers. Well plaid?
As long as there is a High Street there will be tat, this goes on everywhere.

Ban all outside displays, displays should be restricted to internal only. This will clean up the street and cut into the tat profits . . . simple.

I guess there must be a big market for this "tat" or the shops wouldn't be there.

Hide AdRemove the tat from outside, stop playing hoots mon music and I'm sure everybody will be happy. The Royal Mile is a disgrace but no councillor or official has the slightest interest in doing anything about it.

I really don't understand all the fuss Edinburgh folk make about the Gold Brothers and their tartan tat. Entrepreneurialism is, by definition, the practice of identifying gaps in the market in pursuit of a profit. The Royal Mile is obviously a magnet for tourists, so it stands to reason that these shops will be here.

The cash-strapped Church of Scotland is set to ignore recommendations that its Storytelling Centre be sold – that would mean handing back about 1.5m of grants received for the project. Once upon an opinion …
"The world's first purpose-built centre for storytelling officially opened in June 2006 at a cost of 3.5 million." And people ask why the country is in debt.

If you're a private business you look at the sums, if you are a charity you expect taxpayers' money. Do they not realise this is NOT working? It never ceases to amaze me that charities think the purse is bottomless.
