Cancer victim beats fears in charity abseil

A MAN who is dying of cancer has raised more than £1000 by taking on a charity abseil.

Muirhouse man Arthur Johnson successfully negotiated an East Lothian lighthouse despite being afraid of heights, generating 1100 for Macmillan Cancer Support.

The 55-year-old was told earlier this year that his colon cancer had spread uncontrollably and that he had, at most, two years to live.

Rather than accept his fate lying down, he opted to embark on a series of fundraising challenges which he undertakes even though he is receiving chemotherapy.

He said: "This was a fabulous day with brilliant sunshine and the most amazing, inspired and determined people all with the same aim.

"We all succeeded in raising large sums of money for our chosen charity and overcame our fears and concerns regarding the abseil. It was a major triumph for many on the day."
