Rescue drama for boy stuck in school drain

A SCHOOLBOY stuck in a drain was freed after a major rescue operation yesterday.

The 11-year-old boy had to be released by firefighters after he climbed into the hole at his school in Bearsden, near Glasgow.

It is thought vandals had removed the manhole cover at Killermont Primary, leaving the drain exposed.

The boy became wedged into the hole – although his head and shoulders were above ground – but school staff were unable to pull him free and had to call firefighters to help

The operation, which took about 20 to 25 minutes, involved 15 firefighters from all over the Glasgow area.

A spokesman for Strathclyde Fire and Rescue Service said: "

"The shocked youth was examined by the attending paramedics and ambulance crews. He was extremely fortunate in sustaining only bruising to his leg.

"He was able to be taken home by his parents."
